I've been listening to dance music now for 16 years now and seen all the improvements in production quality. I brought my first sidechain compressor around 98 (nano compressor) and it was pretty cool if redundant in my studio in those days.
I must admit i've never tried to use it subtly or really even on kick / bass. I prefer punchy kicks and tight rolling basses and mix with the kick more prominent.
Clever (read precise) eq'ing, sound selection, compressor attack / release are all valid techniques in helping achieve a cohesive sound.
sometimes u want to smash kick and bassline together so it become more bass. smack my bitch up is probably not sidechained, if so reverse lol. use the kick as a boost for baseline so its louder when the kick enters.

no, the phasing would actually give you less bass

are you using cubase 4? if so, route a prefader send to the sidechain. this way you can mute the kick channel and it will still be sent. you can probably do the same thing in sx3 using the quadro method (i'm not sure).

SX 3, how exactly do u route a prefader ? there is a prefader button on the send channel, but it doesnt change anything.
You could create a sidechain specific channel? I usually do this for increased flexibility.
I lay about a new audio channel with kick playing a 4/4 and just turn the track volume down. Useful if you want the effect to continue after the audible kick has stopped.

Turning the volume down removes the sidechain effect. What do u mean specific channel ?

I know everyone cant be using it. Id love to hear some samples from some of your work with no sidechain used ,so people will realize that they dont need it. so post some samples.
Which is the purpose of the topic? ... I don't really understand... some people use it, others not, and what?
The most important is if the track is good or not, sidechain or not!
no?

What's with all this no sidechaining elitism?
It doesn't have to be used on bass, and it doesn't have to be that obvious.
I like to use it on percussion and pads too. You can even use other triggers than a kick.
For example, compressing a pad with the hihats as a trigger.

i prefer to do the kick/bass oopa thing and then have other rolling basses that have low end cuts and sidechain. even if you have a good clean kick/bass combo sidechaining can sound great. sidechains from kicks sound awsome on pads as well as long leads with delays. get creative with it and its your friend.
