But but but if you compliment someone you like, you are giving them a reason to smile. When you give someone a reason to smile, it makes you feel good.
If you insult someone you dislike, you aren't giving them a reason to smile (unless your insult is funny). When you insult someone you dislike, even if they dislike you, you're probably making them feel bad. Why would making someone feel bad be a good thing?
Best thing to do is find something nice to say or don't say anything at all. Surprisingly enough if you find something nice to say about someone you might end up liking them, despite yourself.
...And posts like this are why I'm called a goodie two shoes. Sigh
