that's the definition of song. A song is any musical piece that's written for singing, song comes from the word sing. that's why a song has to have singing in it. i don't nkow what you would call it otherwise if it doesn't have singing though, a musical piece? i just say "track" or "tune" instead of song when talking about a EDM "song", but i guess those aren't correct either.

I just personally would like to see a trance artist come out and be able to play an instrument very well...because that's what music is all about.

I've also thought what if there could be a whole new breed of emotive dance music that isn't quite as monotonous as trance, but has ever-changing notes and chordes that don't repeat so frequently. The follow a more jazz musician style or a classical music style, but still stands emotive and artistic.

I don't know...it's just a thought..and it's probably possible.

It's called Intelligent Dance Music. It's my favorite genre of music. I got into this before i got into trance, and this is why i only HALFWAY like trance... I got spoiled on IDM!!

Yea, my favorite is stuff by "Orbital"

I like a lot of the older electronica too... Kraftwerk, Vangelis, tuff like that..

You know, a lot of electronica STARTED OUT as what you describe...

and there are plenty of modern people keeping this alive. Look for stuff by "Shpongle" and some of "Aphex Twin" (he is a big trance dude, so you all know him really well, right?). Also, "Jean-Michel Jarre" and "Tangerine Dream"... And if you wanna know some other early electronica, try "Wendy Carlos"..

Also I don't really think a rockband writes more songs than an electronic music artist...usually more than a year between albums.

And one-hit wonders...as if they don't exist in pop/rock?

"song" comes from the word "to sing," so a song is typically sung by a performer or singer, which implies it has lyrics. In Trance we use the terms "track" or "tune" much more often.

There is no doubt in my mind that rock bands write more musical material, on average, than Trance artists. Anybody else agree?

it can take longer to write an 8 minute trance track than it would take to write a 4 minute rock song

I understand the difference you are making between like a song and a not-song. But honestly....what the difference between underworld - king of snake...and a version without vocals.

In my opinion the human voice is a musical instrument as well as any other.

What the hell are you guys talking about?

First of all, don't compare pop music to trance. It takes 500 times more "musical talent" to write a trance song than a pop song. People that make trance music not only have to write the song themselves (which is much more complex and complicated than a pop song), but (99% of the time) produce the track as well. Pop artists... umm... they write down some lyrics that mean absolutely nothing, string them together, get some broad with a brutal voice to sing them, and then stick a couple of chords in the background. Then this "song" ends up in $100 000 studio and someone else masters it. Is this musical talent?

No...

Oh, but they do live shows, so all of a sudden, they have musical talent?

If you want to hear musical talent go hear the symphony, or a jazz band, or something like that. Those people have talent...

i just wanna say, although the chances of it getting readthis far into a thread is minimal, that most ppl become djs cos they like playing OTHER ppls records. When a dj becomes popular they may produce, but thats just cos they know it will sell whatever

hmmm

I made stuff myself BEFORE I got some decks and got mixin. It's pretty different stuff, tho by mixing you get a feel for structure of dance son...ehh tracks

Lots of DJ's seem to also be producing tho....guess those two things are controlled by the same genes or something
