I've got one planned for later in the year. Other then that, i won't do any event if i think there is a chance i could lose money...

Although there are plenty of breaks producers and DJs from there, the genre is really more readily associated with the USA and cities like Miami or DC. If house and progressive were dwindling in the UK then maybe I'd be worried for Toronto.

We just happened to have a lot of breaks events in '07. It was an anomaly. A nice one for a lot of us, but still a blip on the radar.

I've been doing breaks since the begining. my first event was june 2000. it's just started to fizzle and so I'm moving on.

Re: Re: toronto hates breaks??

Adam Freeland hasn't played/ produced good breaks in YEARS! Ever since that terrible nirvana remix he did, he's been complete garbage. Even his label Marine Parade didnt put out anything for a few years, and the current releases are more indie-electro (like Alex Metric -- which actually isnt bad stuff - but i wouldnt call it breaks)
And the Stanton Warriors last big mix -- the Fabric cd, was mostly just tech house and electro house tunes slightly changed with a breaky kick put in...

Problem is breaks just keep on recycling the same samples, or just take from other styles and put a break beat in... They used to be innovative and creative - especially in the electro.breaks days (before the big commercial electro house movement -- stuff like Tipper, Si Begg, and the trigger label) - glitchy and BASS heavy...
I LOVED that stuff, and used to spin it primarily back in 2002-2003.

If you want good breaks these days, look at dubstep and glitch-hop -- there's much more refreshing music happening in these scenes.

Like pretty much everything in Toronto, the Breaks got consumed by House.

This is what I've learned about Breakz.

It was a phase when it was around 2 yrs ago, that realllllllllly annoyed me, b/c 90% of the ppl were bandwagon jumpers. Now the phase is house was we can see.

Now, the Breakz scene is diff ... it's mostly retired junglist or house/trance/techno kids from the Rave days, who has been in the scene for more then 7+ yrs. Jungle and Breakz are the only two genre that has not "sold out" and still kept to it's roots. All the breakz kids just want to have fun, they don't care about headliners at all and most of them rather not pay the big price tag ... they rather hear a local spin for $5.00

I don't like breakz at all, but i respect the genre a lot and all the old skool ravers I use party with that are into it.

Everything in our scene moves in cycles and phases ... soon house will be the past.

i agree with you but fuck, i wanna see bigass headliner from time to time. while toronto have probably the best breaks locals on the face of the planet we need to see and hear somebody big from time to time.

i love getting down to some house dont get me wrong but its not the same. bitches be screaming like an ambulance, going "oooooh you're fucking good" and all i cant think is "shit, play me some breaks and i'll show you whats really fucking good". its just not the same.

come november i'll start going out a bit again, challenging random people to battle. if people like what they see maybe some of them will get into breaks. and if lots of people get into breaks maybe something will change, thats how i figure it and thats pretty much the only thing that i can do.

play me this and ill set your brain on fire

Do you go to Mixed Bag often? Katie and I used to go religiously almost every Friday for a few months (can't beat the cover ), but eventually got bored of it cause it was too much funk and not enough of the Breaks I really like.
