but most of this is due to higher taxations and regulations here.
The food is cheaper there because we have boards that control produce output by the farmers, in the US, farmers can produce as much as they want.
Hotels are more expensive here because of taxes too, plus i would be very surprised about that 70$ rate in the downtown areas, you have a car, tourists visit and they are stuck downtown and have to face steeper prices, even in the US.
i agree. taxes and costs here in socialist canada are ridiculous. We have no one but ourselves to blame!
$70 is along the freeway or in the suburbs. However travelling to eastern ontario not long ago the best rate i could find anywhere (that wasnt a flee bag encrusted no name motel) was $94 at a comfort inn. Thats before tax. And Thats a COMFORT INN!, not Holiday inn by a long shot.
Most downtown cities are higher in price but room for room you get better quality, service and amenities for your dollar. I stayed at a 4 star holiday inn in atlanta for $149 per night. A similar holday inn in toronto goes for $249 per night (at least it did when i compared the 2 last year).. and that 249 doesnt include our higher taxes and our so called "destination charge"
I work in the toursim industry and I am faced with this question every day!
What does Toronto have to offer?
Personally I find the waterfront could be a HUGE selling point.
Like Chicago... add lots of patios, restaurants, give it nightlife, GLAM IT UP!
I think we should also pay more attention to our adventure travel...
white water rafting, hiking, Atv'ing, snowmobiling, caving, cycling.
^^^^^^^^^^^^ This however requires getting there, another resource we are lacking... TRANSPORTATION!
I can go on and on....

Make Toronto of architectural interest!
You know how you do this? Build more condos. Interesting ones. Where boring, cement clubs used to be.

I would be very sceptical that Europeans would want to visit Canada for their cities, if they want to see skyscrapers, they can just check New York or Chicago.
I think Europeans are more intrested in open spaces and wilderness, they see Canada as a big forest.

Ya. You mean the Georgian Manor, I assume, at Blue Mountain (Interwest). They fucking charge A TONNE () -- very expensive, agreed.
Had friends from NC stay there a couple years ago, and they commented the same.
(NOTE: Interest no longer runs things at Blue. Interwest sold their interest in it. Its now run by a different company (not sure if this will improve things, or not... maybe, yeah.)

Most definitely. Everybody talks about the waterfront but you can get that everywhere. What they don't have are gigantic and practically untouched wilderness areas.
I can't say whether it would work or not, but I'd also talk up the ethnic food that's not of European origin. We have an extremely high Asian population and as such we have some pretty good and authentic food, and it's perhaps a little more friendly for Americans and Europeans than going to China with all of the inherent cultural, language, and political barriers.
That's really something of more limited appeal, though. The main aspect unique to Canada is the wilderness. Also skiing and snowboarding for Americans since their resorts tend to suck. We're not the Swiss Alps but we're closer.

I think wed attract more people if we created a tourist mecca in conjunction with the outdoors idea. But to be honest, Most tourists are not looking to have a close encounter with bambi unless shes riding a pole for $20
