To be fair, France was relatively lackluster in the first round of the World Cup in 2006. Using similar tactics they did today, turning it on in the 2nd round through to the final... And it worked for them then.
Romania is a tough defensive team, not scoring against them is not the end of the world.

Well, France were pretty much playing a 4-2-4 except the guys that were wingers in theory, were helping the midfield. You can't really play this tactic with a single defensive midfielder, the midfield becomes far too weak. A good alternative would have been a 4-4-2 diamond... without one of the wingers and one of the DMs, entering Nasri and another midfielder.
I don't think Romania were ever going to attack in any force except on the break. One defensive midfielder would have been plenty strong enough, especially late on when it had long been clear Romania weren't ever going to surge through the middle.
very boring game but it was expected in a matchup where both teams are so good in defence. france with a slighter edge as they actually had a few chances on romania but i was severely underwhelemed. granted they are missing their captain and star player but they need to kick it up a notch for their match against netherlands, who i'm sure is going to be brimming with confidence after italy.

Gomis was nervous, Anelka sucks, Benzema was very solid, Ribery was disapponting.
Romania had a very solid game aside from one stupid yellow.
