That was absolutely crystal clear. I don't know what the linesman was smoking.

There was a italian player laying down on the ground, but outside of the field, therefore he doesn't count.

yes, but he's still a part of the match since the clock wasn't stopped by the referee to get him off the field. that's why when you're injured you sit down ON the field, the ref pauses the game, and once you're off you're considered to be legally not involved in the play of the match. when the italian player simply stalked off the field, he was still accounted for as an involved player. therefore the goal was onside and counted.

I wonder why none of the commentators mentioned that.

I remember reading a rule in an old football rules book that said: a player is forbidden to walk off the field if he has the direct intent to put an opponent offside - doing so is worth a yellow card.

So unless the rule changed, it is an illegal goal.

well a player can run to the fucking bathroom if he wants to. as the rules go, a player needs to ask a referee's permission to get off the field, further requiring a permission to come back onto the field of play, in order to be adjudged as not involved in the match.

that was the problem, he didn't ask the referee to leave the field. and you're right, he should've got a yellow caution for it.

A player doesn't need to ask permission to the referee to leave the field if they do so as part of the game. Example, wingers running to the line to catch a ball, and needing extra space to brake! Players do this all the time.

I didn't see how he got there. If he got injured by contact and fell outside, that's legal. If he got injured inside the field and moved outside without permission, then yes, it should've been worth an yellow card.

But either way it was still offside.

he got "injured", went off the field, and after the goal promptly got up to complain about the call and played the rest of the half without a problem.

i actually feel like the offside goal is irrelevant at 3-0. italy have done nothing to make me feel like they belong in this match.
