I understand what you’re saying but the argument really doesn’t work for two reasons. Also let me preface this by saying I have been using Ableton for about 4 years now to do all of my edits and to produce.

The first thing is that as much as I love Ableton and all of its features the crowd doesn’t like it and most people don’t want to see people sitting at their laptop nodding there head. I understand this is just a promo mix but when it comes to playing live Ableton is great but I and 98% of the public find much more enjoyment in seeing someone rock some equipment to do the same thing. Also not labeling the set as an Ableton mix from the get go kind of bothers me because it makes it seem as if people mixed it live. Every other mix now is done in Ableton it seems and it just makes the people who actually mix live and slip up here and there sound bad. Reasoning behind this is because everybody gets use to perfect CD’s which is not how it really is.

The second reason is because yes I would rather drive the Ferrari but what’s the point of driving it if you’re only going to drive 5 miles per hour. I haven’t heard the mix yet so I don’t know what you have done but I bet its only a few effects and some non-eqing mixing. About 98% of people that use Ableton to do DJ sets don’t get close to using it to its full potential. So basically it’s just a perfectly beat match set that doesn’t require much skill over then finding out which tracks sounds pretty together and rendering it.

So in closing I haven’t even checked out the mix yet and will do. Not trying to be fussing just giving your some reasoning behing my statements. Will report back when its check out. Also if you wish check out my mix Josser and give me a hard time as well, lol.

lovely, I've been using it since 2.0 for production and DJing also.

I fucking hate this argument, it's horseshit. I've seen countless Ableton sets, the only time I've seen it be at a detriment to the night has been Sasha, but thats cos he's lazy, it's not Abletons. I've also seen Jeff Mills painfully try to still prove he can mix on 3 decks when it's blatantly obvious he can't. Ableton would help him, but like an old man he's stuck in his ways.
Two ableton sets I've seen that stand out in my mind as two of the best sets I've ever heard, are when I saw Carl Craig at fabric , and Andy Stott at last years Sonar festival. I can assure you the crowd absolutely loved it on both occasions.

maybe, but thats your philosophy, not mine. I want people dancing, not staring at me "rocking equipment"

so I should label it as an Ableton mix out of respect for people who don't mix on Ableton? give me a break
I've been Ableton mixes on here for as long as I care to remember, I'm sure I labelled them at some point but noones ever seemed to have cared before. And why should they if the musics good?

Ha I wouldn't judge me entirely on this, I was fucking hammered
I get your point, and agree with you, but in the main I'm always trying to do something different with ableton, as I'm sure RJT, Bas, Clovis, Jay etc... can testify to, doesn't always work, but I'm never plodding along from one track to another, there's always something happening.
I very rarely use FX either.

Awesome, the only reason I said anything was to let you know I know the capabilities of the program. Also alot of people that say stuff about it are people who don't know how to use it, can't use it or are afraid of it.

You can hate it or not but it’s the truth. I can sit and listen to an Ableton set and be cool with it if the music is good some times. But I would more impressed to see it done equipment. People use Ableton to mix tracks and not play live. It wasn’t meant for that; it was meant for production and playing live. If you’re not going to use it to its full capabilities then it’s a farce personally. You are completely right about Jeff Mills though.

It has nothing to do with that. Yes people might be dancing but the person using it is sitting up there click and pointing having a program do all the work. I could teach my grandma to use Ableton in two hours; at least enough to get her to start putting tracks together.

No. But you label it to let people know that you used no skill in phasing and beat matching. You have all the time in the word to sit in front of the program trying to see what works. When you play with decks or hardware you have to know what works or make it work.

When your representing yourself as an artist or as a DJ it does matter. I really could care less if a mix is done in Ableton. I just hate it when someone has to ask to find out. At least you were honest. Ableton gives everyone the opportunity to be a DJ with little skill required. It saturates the market, the forums and the airwaves with people who don’t even know the basics in spinning. Some might say times have changed and there is no need to understand or be able to perform them but I’m not one of them.

Rock n’ Roll. I heard a bit of it on the train on the way home and you were doing a lot with the program from what I could tell. I have to take a few more listens in order to give a proper review.
And once again I don’t mean to get on you or anything. Music is Music and all that shit but I just wanted to give a reason for my comments. Everyone has different opinions and that’s all gravy, but I have given everyone I know some crap, including Rob on this same subject so please don’t take anything personal.

The only assumption I made was about how you used the program in once sentence. I contemplated taking it out because I know I have never heard any of your mixes but I didn’t. Because 97% of the time it’s true. Also I’m to lazy to read through what I wrote again so If I made some stupid point or something please disregard. Back to the mix!

You say it's the truth but haven't offered any proof, just your personal opinion. It isn't a compelling argument, for me at least.
Like I've said I've seen a good number of Ableton sets and have only been disappointed by Sasha's, in many cases I haven't even noticed it's been an Ableton set until afterwards.
But I have been bored to tears a number of time listening to people rocking out the hardware (James Zabiela for example). As long as it's good, who cares?
I'll freely admit I love hearing a shithot 3 deck techno mix, a la hood and rolando, but there's not a lot of people that can pull it off.

I'm also not sure how right it is to be telling people how they should be using Ableton, I'm pretty sure Ableton are happy selling it to people who are going to use it to DJ.

It has everything to do with that. I go to clubs to dance, listen to great techno, and generally see into the fucking future
The medium in which the music is delivered to me is irrelevant, as long as it's good. I've had many more shit nights musically due to vinyl / CD DJ's (even mega skilled rock the fucking equipment ones) than my single Sasha experience.

I never really registered a massive difference in what I was doing on decks and what I was doing with Ableton at the start, I'm not sure whether or not it's because I made the transition from vinyl to Ableton pretty much overnight, or that because I've been doing it for so long, but it seems irrelevant to me now. I know I'd definately notice now if I were to go back, but I don't think thats going to happen. My 1210's are for sale, after gathering up far too much dust, unused.

like i say, it's pretty well known on these forums I'm an Ableton DJ, and I'm pretty sure it hasn't hindered my popularity on here, in the most part my sets are well recieved, but I definately agree with you about saturating the market. However, I wouldn't change it. The cream rises to the top
