It has been mentioned MANY times by the commentators, that one of Russia's biggest problems was that they had no confidence in their own national team. They didn't take failure very well, and therefore, played cautiously. They got beat by Spain easy, but for whatever reason, they stepped it up enormously after that game. As you have seen they have shown marked improvement that has resulted in a lot of learning what they are capable of. I think the more they play together, the better this will get. I am looking forward to a good game tomorrow.

I think it really all comes down to money. With all of these rich Russians about, rubles have been pumped into the Russian game like never before. For the last few years they have been able to afford to bring in talented players from abroad to raise the level of play in their domestic league. The Russian players benefit from the daily competition in training and in matches but have also greatly benefited from the experiences they've had while playing top European competition in the UEFA Cup and the Champions League. Also having the money to bring in a world class coach in Guus Hiddink, who can bring in a winning mentality as well as new techniques and tactics, is massive.
