I don't know which studies you're referring to, but there have been studies done in Holland, New Zealand, and a few other places, not to mention by the U.S. Department of Transportation, which "prove" the exact opposite and show that chronic smokers are up to 10 times more likely to be involved in an accident.

Of course, studies are just studies and that is why I put "prove" in quotation marks. One study proves very little.

probably because weed makes you paranoid and a hell of a lot more cautious behind the wheel. I've gotten behind the wheel high a few times and I ended up driving like a senior citizen - barely doing the speed limit, not taking any chances whatsoever

Which makes you a traffic obstruction and thus a danger to other drivers on the road. Also, much like "senior citizens", stoned drivers often have much poorer lateral control - in other words they drift from side to side and often onto the median.

Alcohol minimizes the perception of risk so that maneuvers that are actually dangerous appear to be safe. Weed exaggerates the perception of risk, so maneuvers that are totally safe feel dangerous. Opposite effects, but neither are good. For example, a stoned driver is likely to just slam on the brakes to avoid an animal or pedestrian, even when swerving is clearly the safer move.

The only drugs which have actually been shown to improve performance are amphetamines and cocaine for fatigued drivers (not that I am recommending this - they're still illegal).

That kind of attitude is exactly why we do need stiffer penalties.

I've never smoked it and gotten behind the wheel of a car afterwards.

Sorry, I should clarify that when I said "stiffer penalties" I meant specifically for DUI.

Edit: One other thing - like alcohol, I believe that there are safe amounts that don't significantly impair an experienced driver. When I say DUI I'm talking about stoned, not slightly mellowed after 1/8th of a joint.

I'm sure you've got a very interesting story there and I'd love to hear it sometime, but I do think that driving a car is slightly more difficult and dangerous than getting a haircut.

omg you guys are so slow...LOL

What I meant was that ,If you can go and get a hair cut while stoned and not freak the fuck out when the guy is cutting your hair around the ear, plus that buzzzing sound from the trimmer.Only the chosen ones can handle that kind of extreme.
