I'm probably going to take business class on the train so it wont be any problem I believe. I'm going to take the train to and from the school every day.. so I think I'll invest in monthly business class tickets.. But we'll see..

Go with a FireWire sound card if you possibly can. IMO, the order should be:
1. Internal (obviously if you have a laptop, this isn't going to work)
2. Firewire (anything Motu, Echo or even go for an Apogee Duet if you have no need for hardware inputs. The Apogee would be my top choice if you are running all software and have no plans in expand in the hardware arena)
3. USB - never really seen any USB sound cards I thought were any good, but you can always do with an M-Audio (ugh) card if money is tight.

Thanks for the info.
I've got a Virus TI and I'm actually planning on acquiring some more hw synths with time.

In that case, Echo, RME or the Motu would be your top choices there. The Motu 828 is a good firewire interface. The RME Fireface 800 is great as well. If you are planning on getting more hardware, then I'd suggest making sure that whatever you get had good AD/DA converters because that's going to make a difference with hardware. Personally I think the MOTU or the RME has better converters than the echo, but some here may disagree. If you can swing it, go ahead and spend the money now, so you don't end up regretting and replacing later (as so many of us have done).
Oh, and stay away from Presonus, cheap components and noisy inputs (although the Central Station Monitor Control station is surprisingly good).

Really appreciate all the info. I'll take everything you've said into consideration.
