Thanks for all the kind replies on this one
It's not that I am angry about tracks getting downloaded and distributed illegally over the internet, I think everyone knows that's just something that happens these days. It's still promotion on my part. But people sometimes just don't realise how much time you actually put into a release. An EP like Dopamine Theory probably takes me 5 or 6 whole days to produce each original track (so about 2 weeks in total), and another couple of days for the remix by Yvel & Tristan. Then you got the artwork, press release, distribution, advertising costs, etc etc. And you end up selling maybe 400 - 500 copies if you're lucky, which in terms of profit doesn't really compare to the amount of work you put into it. Especially if you come across some random download blog which manages to get more than 700 downloads in just a few days, it all starts to feel a bit pointless.
Now while some people say you shouldn't do it for the money, do it for the love of music, etc you just have to be realistic; Everybody needs a basic income to live. I am one of the lucky ones that actually play out enough to make this my full time job, partially due to the releases (gigs kind of make up for the money you 'lose' while releasing music). More than 90% of the other producers are probably not that lucky and just really need those sales to live off if they ever want to start doing it full time.
Anyway, just my 2 cents Don't take it as offence or anything but sometimes I just have to give my honest opinion on the whole matter as well.
