I guess I might have made a mistake by confusing the term "HTML editor" with "HTML compiler", but then again, I didn't realize that people would be so nit-picky. In any case, I knew precisely what I had in mind, it's just that I was writing the first post late at night, so I guess I didn't expend as much energy as I should've to ensure that the post was all technically precise.

Thanks to all those who offered me help anyways... zokissima, you have a PM in the mail

And just to clarify, I know that you can write HTML coding and then upload it via File Transfer to the web-host provider, but: 1. for me that didn't work previously, as I already mentioned, and 2. that procedure is rather time consuming if you are working on the web-page in a "trial-and-error" fashion, fixing up the code here and there and then reviewing the page to see how it looks. I know that I'm a n00b and not an expert in web-page design (not by a long shot), but I though that this was about something else rather than proving who's the best and who's a dummie?

^^ That's what comes up and that's the problem I'm trying to solve, I guess I should say...

You don't need to upload your page anywhere if you're just doing trial-and-error design. Save the page on your comp, and open the file location through your browser.

when i view the source of the page it has different characters representing the brackets, instead of the code it should be. never bothered to learn the term for that but the replacements to "& lt ;" etc are meant to be used when you want to actually show the < symbol and not have it picked up as code by browsers..

i'm guessing you're using some kind of browser app that the host provided and pasting your code in or something? anyways solve the problem by copying/pasting your code into a .html file with notepad on your own pc.. and upload it to the server

Yep, that's correct

Aha, ok... that seems to work a bit...

Anyways, it's still kinda tedious... I wish I could just push a button, like on those HTML editors, and my page would be displayed to me.. rather than having to save it and then refresh the browser.. lol

Thanks for your help

I use Maguma Open Studio (it's on SourceForge).

It's pretty decent. There are some bugs, but ultimately it is functional.

I run a local Apache/PHP/MySQL server so I don't need this feature, but Maguma will (apparently) run PHP scripts for testing. This leads me to believe that you can probably render HTML in Maguma as well which will make for easier troubleshooting.

I don't recommend WYSIWYG editing. Frontpage makes REALLY bloated code and you have to futz around with the program to get what you want (assuming that's even possible). I haven't used Dreamweaver, but I can't imagine spending that much money for such a program when there are many good text editors which will recognise at least HTML tags. Maguma recognises PHP functions (both built-in and custom) and helps you write code with the helper bars (whatever they're called) like the Microsoft Visual Basic editor.

Text editing, while having a greater learning curve, allows a lot more control over your page. You get exactly what you want, and nothing else.
