Why do you think USB2.0 won't be good enough?

FYI - I just stopped off at Guitar Center to check out the unadvertised prices of their Labor Day sale, and noticed that they had Atmostphere marked down about $50. If you're thinking about buying it to own Atmosphere and get the Omnishpere upgrade price (not announced yet), now may be the time to do it. Rumor is, the upgrade price will be announced next week (Sept. 1).

Yes but there will be a cut off date so buying it now will mean you won't eligible.

I have a Belkin Hub that works just fine, although its one of the few Belkin products that I can say that about.

Firewire has a faster sustained throughput than USB 2.0. Check this quote of a USB site:

quote:

Question: Which is faster Hi-Speed USB 2.0 or FireWire?
Answer: In sustained throughput FireWire is faster than USB 2.0.

Question: If Hi-Speed USB 2.0 is a 480 Mbps interface and FireWire is a 400 Mbps interface, how can FireWire be faster?
Answer: Differences in the architecture of the two interfaces have a huge impact on the sustained throughput.

*FireWire, uses a "Peer-to-Peer" architecture in which the peripherals are intelligent and can negotiate bus conflicts to determine which device can best control a data transfer

*Hi-Speed USB 2.0 uses a "Master-Slave" architecture in which the computer handles all arbitration functions and dictates data flow to, from and between the attached peripherals (adding additional system overhead and resulting in slower data flow control)

FireWire vs. USB 2.0 Hard Drive Performance Comparison
Read and write tests to the same IDE hard drive connected using FireWire and then Hi-Speed USB 2.0 show:

Read Test:

* 5000 files (300 MB total) FireWire was 33% faster than USB 2.0
* 160 files (650MB total) FireWire was 70% faster than USB 2.0

Write Test:

* 5000 files (300 MB total) FireWire was 16% faster than USB 2.0
* 160 files (650MB total) FireWire was 48% faster than USB 2.0

My Audio Interface runs through my current Firewire and it's only a 4 pin. Will using a hub (if I can even use one with 4 pin) increase my latency and possibly make the sound worse?

It depends on the quality of the hub. As with anything, if its a cheap hub, there is usually a reason, so don't cheap out on a hub. Also try to get a powered hub so that it doesn't draw power off of the FireWire bus.

Your really shouldn't use a hub for your audio interface - that hub is servicing several other devices at once which means there will be some bottlenecking introduced. For the same reason, you should not have any external drives that you intend stream from going through a hub.

It's best to use the hub for all the other non vital peripherals such as iloks, printers, etc., ad save your direct computer USB ports for audio interfces and drives

Yea I've got 6 USB ports so will grab a USB external. Should be fine and if it does stutter, once I know what patch I'm using I can easily copy that one to the HDD and tell Omnisphere to run it from there.

some bad info here. Usb shares bamdwidth across all busses. The ports in your pc are in fact a hub. Except when you have a (very) expensive mainboard. You only get the best performance out of usb when you connect just 1 device. This is why firewire is better for high performance. With this you have the max bandwidth available per port (unless you use a hub) instead of shared across all of them.
