That's only one example anyway; one I picked because it's the most obvious and recognisable.

Ask May himself. He will tell you he was creating house music it just ended up being given a different label.

Whether or not he set out to create something different or the same is irrelevant.

To my ears the original Strings Of Life sounds vastly different to all the house tracks I know from the mid 80's and early 90's.

May's right I assume; he was the one pioneering a scene at a time when I was still pissing the bed, but my ears still tell me different.

To be quite honest, it sounds considerably more like house than a lot of classic house records do.

If you played Sleezy D's "I've Lost Control" to people who didn't know who made it and where it was made, I'll bet most of them today would call it techno.

At that point in time house pretty much was anything with a four to the floor kick, and it was anything from soulful vocals (Salsoul Orchestra) to a dirty 303 (Phuture - Acid Trax).

I don't know, I guess it's all subtleties and hair splitting.

See, I would consider DJ Spen presents DJ Technics - Gabryelle as straight house music, even though it uses a very similar sound to the original Strings Of Life and has a similar structure, and I'd also consider the Strings Of Life remake by Soul Central very housey too.

I don't know why the original seems techno-ey to me, I think it's the more futuristic/spacey feel it has, coupled with less percussion, while I tend to see house as grittier and more rhythmic, using more traditional instruments where techno strives to sound synthesised.
