Not to diminish the love and connection people have with thier pets, but they are just pets. You may look upon your pet as a child, a member of your family or a gentle lover who cleans peanut-butter off your balls, but it is still just an animal and this guy got what was coming to him.
How many times have you heard the words "speed may have been a factor" following a crash? If this guy had misjudged a lane change or hit a scrap of tyre on that dark highway, going 100Mph (160Km/h), he would surely have killed or seriously injured someone. Did he need to keep them at the side of the road for 20 minutes? Probably not, but look at it from the cop's point of view - he pulls a guy over for going twice the limit, the man is frantic, can't even think stright enough to hand over the correct ID when asked and is freaking out...I would suspect him of being on something as well.
I support 100% his actions in this case. The police are there to protect people and your dog, sick as it may be, is not a good enough reason to put someone else's life at risk. At the very least, the cop saying "you better have a kid in there" shows that he accepts certain situations dictate that you may break the law, but come on - a dog, no matter how beloved, is no excuse for putting countless people at risk.
How would this guy have been driving once he got into the city?
Go officer, go.
