I think its a combination of good marketing, great tracks, and great shows. Many people associate his name with trance and that is what gives him his superstar status. He also has a lot of mainstream success.

well, he was fuckin ace in 2002 and 2003. Thats probably the main reason he got a lot of recognition. Marketing etc has ensured that he has remained a huge name :-)

actually all of those who've won it hit their peak a couple of years before they won. Tiesto, PVD, Armin, Oakenfold even. It was after they got popular firstly with regular fans and then went on to 'connect' with the minorities, often through cheesy songs/actions that they they won.
