I only have the single licensed Virus plugin, it is all i need. It is 4 parts multitimbral, meaning one instance can have 4 seperate patches playing at the same time, with each being routed to a different mixer channel within your sequencer.

I had the hardware virus b in my studio for 4 years and the powercore virus sounds identical.

So if I just wanted to get one card basically just to run Virus,(I don't need the other vst's, I have everything I need natively) which one would be my best bet to get? Do I just go for the cheapest one or will I actually have better performance with a more expensive one? Basically what I am asking is will the Virus plug run same performance level no matter what card I get. I know you need more cards or licenses to get more polyphony. But as far as glitching and what not is it stable?

The virus needs one full DSP to work correctly. Every card has at least 1 DSP, so yes it will work properly .
More DSP's just means more processing power and thus means you can run more plugins . Some plugins are light enough to allow 4 instances being processed by one DSP for instance. Well, at least that's the case with UAD.

I don't know about you guys, but I can run 3 or 4 instances of the 1176-LN, at least 2 Fairchld 670's and 6 or 7 instances of the Cambridge EQ on a single UAD card, so you can run a fair amount of stuff on a single card, depending on how it is used.

here is a quick rundown of how many dsps each powercore card has:

Powercore X8 = 8 DSPs

Powercore Firewire = 4 DSPs

powercore Compact - 2 DSPs

Powercore PCIe mk11 = 4 DSPs

I personally use a powercore firewire with Cubase SX3 and have never ran into any poblems. If you bought a Powercore PCIe mk11 for example, the virus plugin would take up EXACTLY 1 DSP leaving you three DSPs for the other plugins (very nice included reverbs). The one virus plugin gives you 4 parts multitimbral meaning it is like running 4 instances of most software synths anyway.

I have heard of some people running into timing problems when using the virus plugin but i have not encountered any problems myself.

I also like to use the virus as an effects plugin, running external sources through its filters, distortion algorithms, reverbs, delays etc.

Can you run the Powercore PCIe on a pc? Or is that one for mac only?
Also what would be the biggest difference between the express and the PCI mk11, just latency?

the biggest difference (which im sure you already know) is that the PCIe card has to be fitted into a PCIe slot on your motherboard, the PCI card has to be fitted into a PCI slot. PCI is going to be obsolete long before PCIe. It is gradually getting harder to find motherboards with PCI slots. PCIe cards also have performance advantages and a better resale value.

Forgot to add. Yes you can use a PCIe card with a pc, as long as your motherboard has a slot for one.

Yes, I knew this about PCI and PCIe, its just, for some reason I remember reading a while back that the PCIe dsp card was for mac only. But that was a while back, that may have been the case at the time and not any more. Or maybe I am just retarted

But, If the cards have the same chips, what is the big difference? Just latency? The reason I ask is because on this page

http://www.tcelectronic.com/PowerCoreExpress.asp

They make the 2 cards seem the same, they say they run the same amount of plugs and same dsp speed. So is the biggest difference just latency?

What you probably read was that Mac Pros don't have a PCI slot, only 4 PCIe.
