Personally it is not the most important thing, but I do appreciate when a good old classic is played. That said, I just enjoy old music in new sets, to 1) get that nostalgic rush, and 2) contrast the old with the new. If I was listening to a set from '99, I would want early 90's to be thrown in. Doesn't matter the era. If I heard a trance set with only new tunes, and they were good, I wouldn't mind one bit.
What elements make a good trance set, are really some of the same things that make any set good. Variety in tracks, with a cohesive feel. Take the clubber on a journey! Solid transitions; not letting it play out all the time, and not switching over too quickly. For live sets, crowd reaction/direction is huge. Know when to play a pump 'em up track, and know when to cool the room a bit to work up to a finish. And how about some...good tunes! Track selection is definitely #1. If they are not playing solid music, what is the point?
Another point to be made, is that a lot of people here are old enough to have listened to the 'classic' era of trance. Not everybody will yell at the top of their lungs for 'Beachball', because not everybody has heard it. So to them it's just another song, whether it is new or old, does not matter. Most people end up going home happy anyways.
