well u know what u should do is teach the kid how to scratch! how djs sample records... if he's really into edm then teach him the different genre's

give him old paul oakenfold mixes! or tranceport

ask him which style of music he likes play couple of records...of course hes young so he will like trance music. show him couple of good trance artist like pvd, or armin. but tell him to stay away from the cheesy stuff.

i remember when i was like 13 and when i started to get into edm like and i bought tranceport.

well i would teach him basic scratch mixing...like something cool that he could practice. show some youtube video's.

teaching him how to beatmatch man...thats kinda hard i dont know how your going to do that. but if he gets his own set up tell him not to teach and look at the bpm counter to help...

getting him into chicago house or detroit house is kinda like pushing it to the extremes. he has to choose a genre that works for him.

i think this is an awesome. hes young and motivated and it will def get his mind off of things. good luck!!!

i think a good place to start would be to listen to music with him and do the clapping thing where you teach him to count the beats and recognize the measures and the rule of 8, regardless of musical background or not, it's always a good place to start, plus feeding him easy records and giving him a shot at trying it out while you guys play back and forth, 2 for 2 for example

1.) Good scratching/turntablism is way more difficult than beatmatching.

2.) Why would he try to influence his musical taste? Let the kid like what he likes. He's trying to teach him about DJing, not teach him what music to like...he already likes music. It's not a matter of "getting him to like EDM".

and for the beatmatching.... just turn the volume on both t4racks up.. that way she can hear what you are doing.
