Because I prefer wacky Yohan food, nobody can really help me, unless it's like peel the onions or other peon work which isn't what I like my guests to do.
So I just ensure they come about 15 mins or so before the grub is ready.
Maybe some appetizers while they wait, while you run around like your head is on fire ensure all the food is done right and it's not gone cold. (I hate it when that happens)
Ensuring your guest is comfortable and not bored... Kinda hard if you're single and your gf/wife/SO isn't there to play host. (Esp. when you've invited someone you're not that familiar with)
If you're inviting a girl over... Maybe it's a good thing for her to see how awesome you are in the kitchen... You might not know, but this girl may be into guys who can cook. (Well, I certainly find girls who can cook sexy as hell)
Creativity counts. Though don't go overboard. Ensure you know what your guest's preference is, and whether they like to experiment with new cuisine. Done well, trying out new food is a wonderful dining experience for someone.
Also, nothing is like a good hospitality like a well prepared meal
