I should hope you can execute "a-click" faster than you can say "unit one, move to waypoint". |
Really? So you can do everyting with just one click? You don't have to find the unit, then select the unit, and then find its objective, then give it an order?
Just "a-click" is all you have to do? That sounds like a really fun game.

well, not even that. its the fact that you can zoom out, grab 200 units and get them all to move where you want. they'll fire at whatever they're good at destroying, and you dont need to hold their hand every second. |
Supposedly, that should be as easy as saying:
"Calling all tanks (or whatever); move to alpha"
All of your tanks will move to your waypoint and engage targets along the way (assuming you have thier posture set to fire at will).

1-a-click
Point is, in the time it takes you to say "unit one move there and attack", in a game like starcraft, I can;
-move three groups of units into tactical positions
-select base buildings and order production on 24 new units
-position group 3(slow) to attack a target
-move groups 1 and 2 (fast) into flanking positions on two fronts
-set rally points so reinforcements join groups 123 at location when finished
-order group 3 (slow) to move in
-order group 1, 2 (fast) to attack and soak up damage on two distraction fronts, allowing group 3 to move to their destination
-order group 3 to start attacking
Someone who's not too good at the game would have accomplished pretty much the equivalent of "unit one move there and attack". The difference is that one system allows room for skill differentiation, the other is shallow and puts an extremely restrictive cap on unit control and by extension, strategy.

Since when is realism an issue? It's a strategy game, not a simulation. |
Dude, seriously, as I was getting at when I asked if you liked World in Conflict, we look for different things in a RTS. I like war games with an emphasis on the battlefield tactics and a sense of realism and not on how l33t you are with your hot keys, how fast you can gather resources, and how great you can build your bases.
Base building and resource gathering bores me. I want to be immersed in force on force battles. I think barking orders into a mic will add a new level to immersion into a video game. I also find the technology quite innovative.
You can poopoo it as the shittiest (or second) RTS of all time all you want, I simply will add no weight to your opinion as you obviously are into something different than I.
