he's obviously creative and talented but theres way too much shitty pop music in his stuff (what I've heard anyways) for me to enjoy it. and it really pisses me off when people who don't know shit about edm talk about how awesome girl talk is.

Well I don't think anybody talks about him in terms of EDM (hence why this is in the cor and not MD) - he plays pop music and makes no bones about it. Like last night, the most "EDM'ish" track he played was probably MGMT - Kids (which sounds incredible on a proper soundsystem). He's said repeatedly that he's not a dj - just a guy who likes to make tracks out of sampling and then sequences them together in a predetermined fashion for his liveshows. I wouldn't scrutinize his live gigs anymore than a deadmau5 show. But at least this guy samples with more than eighth notes.
That's right, I just brought deadmau5 into this thread.

Perhaps I should have added a disclaimer...
*NOTE: If you do not like hip-hop or pop music, you will not like Girl Talk. He is not an EDM DJ. He's like a more creative version of a guy spinning music at a bar.

yeah
except there is no performance aspect to what he does other than to put pumpkins on his head, take off his clothes, and crowdsurf
i think girl talk is the musical (if you can call it that) epitome of everything terrible about contemporary USA culture.

Yeah, that's one way to look at it. The shows are a bit over the top, but I think that's the point - to be ridiculous. I viewed it as kind of tongue-in-cheek.
He didn't do much last night, but had some goons throwing confetti and fake dollar bills down on the crowd, etc. I think a lot of creativity goes into piecing together the music at home, but the liveshow itself isn't a performance so much as just playing music for people to dance to.

i know his deal, and i know people enjoy it -
i just feel he is making decadence into a profitable, convenient, and enjoyable package.
imo it's the musical equivalent of robbing a dead man's corpse, and here the dead man is creativity, spirituality, etc
but who i am i really to comment on this. he's making a killing and a lot of bastard children
