I don't think that it is as applicable, especially in the case of reason vs cubase.

If you're looking for a preset factory, Reason is probably not for you. But it's great if you want to do complicated, creative routing and really explore a small number of devices in depth to see what you can get out of them.

True if you have very limiting producing skills.

So its not limiting then? a couple of mediocre synths and very low quality dynamics and eq processors. Why would i settle for this when i can have a multitude of different synths, excellent fx processors, integration with external instruments and effects, recording cababilities, better sequencer, better summing, un-limiting workflow, way better audio integration and visual layout etc etc etc...

I dont have limited production skills by the way. I have used cubase since vst 3.0 in 1997, switched to reason in 2001, then to cubase sx in 2003.

I do agree however that reason is a good piece of software for writing ideas down very quickly. I used to use reason on my laptop when away, on the train etc to quickly write down ideas. I would then take these ideas and produce them in a more comprehensive piece of software.

Cubase is better than Reason because you can add new VST Effects, VST instruments, hardware synths to go with it, you can destruct and alter audio like in an audio editor, the MIDI sequencer is superior, the whole program is alot more customizable, AND you can rewire.
Whereas in Reason, you cant even make your own key commands.

But Cubase is twice the price, and you would need to spend alot of money buying new synths and effects to go with it, as the included ones are pretty poor.

So given the price difference Reason is a good alternative, if we take away the price. I see no reason to prefer Reason over Cubase. (unless you know the program inside out)

I have to say that, the Redrum is excellent though.

Why are you even comparing them? They're so different.
I use both and I cannot say that Cubase is better than Reason nor that Reason is better than Cubase.
There's things you can do in Reason in terms of routing that you couldn't even dream of doing in Cubase. Cubase has excellent audio features and support for VSTs, which Reason obviously doesn't have.
That's why you can't compare them.
