I most DEFINITELY do it for the music....Here in Miami, if you're in it for the money you are in bad shape. Unless you are a RESIDENT DJ @ one the clubs down here, good luck if you get paid within 2 weeks of the party, of if you even get paid @ all. Most of the time, if your a "special guest dj", chances are its a non paying gig...but the publicity is much more rewarding than the money in my opinion.

Yeah, but what if music IS your life?? If you are lucky enough to make a living, as a DJ, you are living the life. You don't mind the late hours and weekends traveling....

but ur family and friends might (if u still have)...
it is not a luxurious job people, if u live for music i think producing and live performance is more atractive. more money (not sellign cds but concerts), better and bigger venues, rarely more than two hours performance and alot more interesting places and times + you dont have to do it all the time, u do it with a new album tour or something lol im dreaming hahahha

If i had all the gear i wanted and i didn't have to put up with BS (yeah right no BS... ) I would do it for next to nothing. I would like to break even at the end of the night. When I have to put up with shit, i think of the money and that keeps me thinking positive. If i were to choose one. I would say music though... If you don't have a love for music, you don't have loads of fun, and the motivation to be a good DJ is not there... why DJ. Do something else...

when i dj out in clubs, i usually dj for the fun of it. I mean, i have promoters asking me to dj an hour for fifty bucks (the price of a taxi is 25 to go to and from). So clearly is not a monetary thing. Thats not to say I don't accept high paying gigs, I get $200 an hour (plus equipment rental) from some of my clients.

Ultimately though, there is a great sense of accomplishment when you are making everyone in the club/house party, have a great time because of your djing.

i'm throwing my 4th house party this friday and i'm going to pay for some booze, glowsticks, but each one of the previous 3 parties was labeled "the best party ever" and guess what, i had such a blast DJing, seeing the people dance, scream, go nuts...

i was affiliated with a dj 'club' at my uni, helped them gather people and promote events... what started out to be a 'community of electronic music lovers and djs with no self-promotion' turned out to be exactly what they said they weren't - self-promotion and about money. they're now throwing their parties at a local club (i did a gig there and the atmosphere just wasn't right) with sponsorship and whatnot... i have a bad taste about the whole thing, maybe because they didn't ask me to dj after the first 2 events, maybe because they're doing gigs and i'm not, but it just seems they're selling out and the first two events were fishy (envelopes were passed, entrance fee was charged at a house party where no booze was sold and i never saw any of it but i think the other organizer did)

i'm doing it because music makes me happy and because it can make other people happy. although making some money off of it wouldn't hurt (tracks and equipment aren't free after all...)
