people fucked up drinking and driving a long time ago by smashing up their cars and killing people. it wasn't always illegal. the laws came in for a reason. people are still dying the gov't is still trying to stop that from happening. not sure what the prob is?

That report is from 2002. Page 7, Figure 4. If you were to believe that chart, than the majority of drivers that drink and drive are over the age of 21, just because the majority of drivers are over 21. If we were trying to limit the NUMBER of incidents, then the drinking and driving ban should be for all ages.

Ontario has one of the lowest impaired driving rates in the country (page 5, figure 3).

The proposed restrictions do not add much to what is already in place.
I recently went through the process of getting my license (yes, G1) after my license expired many moons ago and I was surprised at how the restrictions have changed since I was a teenager and got my license the first time.

This was alarming:

That said, I think the limited number of passengers is stupid, and instead of making it a no alcohol rule, I think the sentences should be tougher and I think there is a misconception that only having one drink means you are fine to drive. Restaurants serve larger than 4oz glasses, a pint is larger than the standard size beer according to the MOT, etc. Plus 1oz of alcohol affects a small teenage girl more than someone twice her size - but the campaign was always "you can have 1 drink." Better education and stiffer sentences are a better solution IMO.

The diff between a G1 licence restriction and 21 is that you could have your G class for years and still be subject to these rules. I dont have a problem for restriction based on driving experience, but to rule that all people under 21 are irresponsible is yet another example of the government taking things way too far.

Maybe the solution is to extend the terms of graduated licensing then.
If people with full G licenses are still driving recklessly regardless of age, then having a G license doesn't say much about the experience or the credibility of the driver, does it?

i disagree. I think the current system works fine as is. Yes you will get some tragic accidents but the only way we will ever prevent those is to ban driving altogether. Mcguinty had it right the first time. Let parents be parents. The government cannot be the end all and be all. Im sick of these weekly bans and restrictions that are being placed on our liberties in the name of "safety" or "the environment" or whatever the cause du jour is. Let adults be adults and let parents be parents.

The problem with this stance each and every time is that you completely ignore empirical evidence that indicates that parents aren't being parents, and adults aren't being adults.
