for whatever reason i can't seem to access any of their servers, which means that i can't update the software. i don't know if that might have something to do with how effective they are when i run the scan.
same thing happens to me. I can't update Ad-aware and malwarebytes' anti-malware. don't know what it is but it's fucking annoying. I have to keep uninstalling and reinstalling.

backup your music, papers, etc. and reinstall Windows. (it will take about 30 minutes, then you have a fresh clean fast install)
if you want me to find a guide or something let me know.

What are Macs particularly good for? I wouldn't spend $2000 to buy a Mac when a $600 PC can do the exact same things.

I would only recommend a Mac to someone doing video editing, personally. Even then, a PC with the right components can do just as well. Same goes with music production.
Macs have less virii (?) written for them though, so there's usually at least one smart prick in threads like these piping up to mention that they've never really had that problem

my computer seems to be infected with some sort of spyware. if i do a google search and click on a link, a new window will open and direct me to a suspicious looking URL rather than the actual site i'm trying to visit. this happens both in IE and Firefox.
my spyware removal programs won't let me update before i run a scan, and anytime i try to open a URL for a spyware removal program, the page cannot be found.
what do i do?
my friend just had this problem.right down to the redirecting url bug.heres what i did to fix his...
download IEfix- this program works well in going after the virus that infects and forces internet explorer to redirect.it should knock it off your firefox as well
download SmitFraudFix -its a win32 virus destroyer
download spybot search and destroy and or spyware doctor 6.0.(i prefer spyware doctor although id run both programs then keep spyware doctor permanently on.pm me on spyware doctor ill fill you in on it.
now disconnect your internet connection and run all those programs in safemode:
also hit "control alt delete" and then check your tasklist.that way you can discover what name these viruses go by.simply write down the name of the file first and then and click "end process".if you see the virus icon dissapear at the bottom of your toolbar(you may have to wave the mouse over the icon for it to go away) go do a search of that name on your computer and delete the file.
it might sound like a lot but its pretty simple stuff.of course do all this at your own risk but if your computers messed up anyway how much do you really have to lose? good luck on it i know ive battles a few viruses this year, all on friends computers.the redirect one was actually the easiest to defeat.

That's because mac users don't know how to access the internet.

it was the first response i got from my friend who i was talking to on messenger while i was trying to fix the problem last night.
i'll probably end up doing a reformat just to be safe, even though i just did one not that long ago.
is there a good program that i can run to prevent spyware and viruses from being installed that is 1) free, and 2) will not slow my computer down considerably?

most popular one it seems everyone is using is AVG. it's pretty quick imo.
but yeah i think you should post your hijackthis log before going towards the reformat path. i don't know about you guys, but i tend to hate doing it. reinstalling the OS is easy, but I do depend on a lot of applications, and it takes awhile for me to install them.
i could ghost it, but that's another story for me.

yeah, i couldn't even get Hijack This to install...
reformatting this week won't be too much of a hassle considering i just switched to a new computer at work so i've already got a list and install files for all the programs i use. luckily i don't have too many big programs that i depend on other than CS3.
