What does a mostly-useless GPS tracking system have to do with upkeep on the city's roads, which are the most basic of necessities required for a successful transit system?

Can you demonstrate why 'investment' in GPS tracking is more beneficial than using that money to add extra routes, maybe some communication between the drivers and dispatch to ensure proper route-spacing, perhaps even fixing MORE roads to help ensure the buses that the TTC DOES have on the road last longer?

No no, of course not, investing in a GPS system that tells us what we already know (That the bus routes are poorly managed) is MUCH more beneficial than all those things.

Wow, this will make my life SO much easier when taking the streetcar home after a club. There have been several occasions where I've avoided going out just because I knew there was a possibility I'd have to wait for 20-30 minutes outside in the cold.

Great idea! Just one more reason to get a Blackberry.

I love how it says right now..

next Queen streetcar in:

- 2 minutes
- 2 minutes
- 22 minutes

just underscores the ongoing problem that the system has with non-designated lanes for light rail..

I don't know why they even bother publishing a schedule for the route when the streetcars seem to just arbitrarily arrive whenever they do..

Buses do the same thing. At least the ones that I use on a frequent basis. They usually come anywhere from 6-7 minutes early to 10 minutes late. The schedule is there just for kicks.

All streetcars need dedicated lanes. It is a no brainer.

It's not that easy. You end up eliminating parking spaces and it's the retailers that get hit (like on St Clair W)

Being past 11pm I doubt it'd be frequent service

Some of our readers will have already read my post from early this morning (around 2am) when Spacing got word that the TTC’s GPS tracking system had a “live” web feed (still in beta testing mode) to let riders know the next arrival time of a streetcar.

But Spacing received word from the TTC this afternoon that Next Bus, the company providing the GPS tracker, is going to disable the arrival time feeds for all routes except for the Spadina 510 and the Harbourfront 509 streetcars. The TTC said all other routes are not GPS-to-web enabled. Next Bus is only providing estimated times on the other routes since the info is being pulled from the schedule and not the location of the nearest streetcar. The TTC said Next Bus does not want to provide information to the public that is not yet reliable. Give them credit, though, for not disabling the entire feed and allowing the public to “experiment” with the accurate info from the 509 and 510 routes.

For those of us who were using the Next Bus web site this morning and finding it to be accurate: we were slightly fooled. It just meant that the TTC streetcars were running on time according to their schedule. Which, unto itself, is refreshing.

Japan has had his on busses, trains and subways for about 10 years all availible via your cell phone updated in real time. They will even tell you turn by turn directions (on foot) to get you to the nearest station that will have the shortest total travel time and direct you between busses and trains or even taxi's.
This is one of the reasons I loved living there.

not only Japan, but countries that I've been to that are less modern with a far smaller population and GDP than Canada's. It's a technology that's been around for ages and already being used in many parts of the developed world and within Canada itself for some time. Can anyone say York region?

There's really no reason why this technology can't be in place today. The only reason why it's taken the TTC this bloody long is due to a lack of funding and proper management & planning just like everything else that's wrong with it.
