why? because once a labor force is unionized it is damn near impossible to deunionize it. the autoworkers were unionized in the 1930s and 1940s, a time when the protections they provided to workers might have been necessary. today they are not, but we are stuck with them. in order to get rid of the UAW at say General Motors first you have to have 30% or more of the employees must petition for a decertification election. if that is successful then they must win the decertification election by a majority in order to remove the union from the workplace. this will never happen though, because what worker is going to vote to decertify their union when that union has negotiated them a higher salary, much better benefits, and a fat retirement plan when compared to autoworkers in non-union shops. this is why wal-mart has fought unionization of its workers so strongly, once the union gets in you can plan on paying your workers well above market wages and benefits for the rest of time. |
the question was meant to be rhetorical; but thanks for the lesson on labor law, that was quite interesting. If our government was really concerned with keeping american manufacturing viable it would loosen the protections offered to unions.

no bailout is a good thing imo, but the reason for no bailout is just an example of what is wrong with the american unionized worker.

and also avoiding any of the requirements for concessions from the unions or changes in the way the companies operate. as his last slap in our face Bush is going to flush another $15 billion taxpayer dollars down the drain before he leaves office. the UAW won't give shit now because it knows the companies can go straight to the President to get money |
one of the few things i don't like about Obama is that he is unlikely to ask for huge concessions from the UAW.
on a side note, i'm getting pretty worried about the inflationary effects these bailouts will have in 5-10 years. If we don't start paying down these debts with our existing money supply instead of deflating the value of the dollar and with new issuances of treasuries, i fear we are going to see some pretty steep inflation (relative to what we have seen in the past 20 years).
