Gah. Suffering from CRS (Can't remember shit) is terrible
Anyways
Airwave is a legend in the trance scene. Whether he's producing trance as Airwave, Lolo, Cape Town, progressive as Planisphere or tech/hard trance as the Green Martian and his countless other aliases, he's put his mark on the trance music. Arguably, without Airwave, trance would not be what it is today.
Considering all other NYE events were a bit meh, and what better way to start off 2009 with some trance in your pants?
Got in with Elyot around 10:45, and had couple of double whiskey just to chill. The first DJ was... a bit too cheesy for my liking. Too much vocal fluff. Please retire Daft Punk - Harder Faster Stronger (Deadmau5 remix)
I was a bit sceptical when Kris started off with classics to warm up for Airwave because, well, I didnt know how it'd work out. To my surprise, he put in a good blend of more well known tunes, and some lesser known ones. Loved hearing Randy Katana - In Silence (Txitxarro remix). Brought me way back to 2003-2004. His microphone act during Vengaboys - Kiss (Airscape remix) was... cute . Ended his set with Paul van Dyk - Nothing But You (PvD club mix) which is a bit cheese but somehow I like it. Plus never heard it in a club.
Kris did get the crowd into the groove. Quite enjoyed the set.
Airwave... I admire his production skills, but I was a bit sceptical of him as a DJ. Boy, was I wrong.
Picked it up from where Kris left off with first 3 tracks from his newest album, just to put some epic trance back into the crowd. Then he kicked off for like 45 mins with hardest, sickest hard techno I've heard in a long time. All banging, just the way I like it.
Settled back with good mix of trance, prog trance, back to more tech/hard trance, with good mix of classics and newer stuff. Seemed to know just what the crowd wanted. Style was more reminicient of 2004 which was perfectly fine with me. I bet I've heard most of the tunes he's played, but I can't ID for the life of me so eh.
Never seen a anyone DJ with earbuds though. Must be one helluva expensive earbuds!
By the time I left, Kris was back on and slamming down some tunes. Man has passion for trance.
The vibe was almost best I've been at for a trance party, remiscient of Andy Moor at Fluid Lounge. It wasnt crowded, but the people who were there was very much into Airwave and trance.
You do not have to go to trance events at massive clubs or venues with epic lasers and whatnot. Small club with good sound (and people who love trance!) will make the party just as good. (The sound was good, but the bass could be tad stronger but that's just minor thing)
Staff at Vola was very nice. No issues with bouncers or servers both times I've been there.
If you love trance and you have the chance to see Airwave, go see him. Man is a legend in trance scene.
9/10
PS: please destroy that siren
