Yes, the kick. That way the whoosh ducks out whenever the kick is in, causing it to pulse afterwards.

but since the clap is on the note as the kick wouldn't it take away from the clap and therefore make it useless?

or am I missing something?

Yeah you're not understanding.

The root of the effect isn't one of the claps that's used in the main perc loop, it's a seperate sound on a seperate channel that was likely created offline. If I were to do this, I'd do it as follows:

1) Load up Adobe Audition.
1a) Load a clap sample.
1b) Reverse clap sample.
1c) Apply desired reverb.
1d) Save this as "Generic_Overused_Whoosh.wav"

2) Load up Ableton Live.
2a) Create a simple kick pattern.
2b) Load "Generic_Overused_Whoosh.wav" into a seperate track.
2c) Throw a compressor on the whoosh track, set it to sidechain with the source being the kick.

3) Press Play.

yup just the clap of the track reversed with a 3/4 delay on it. could also be sidechained reverb. i think its delay tho.
