Transit is a fuckin mess in the GTA. With the user base, population and level of interest you would think we would have an efficient system by now. After a 120 years of train service in this country, why can't they figure out how to make switches that work in the winter? Do Russia, Germany, Sweden have this problem? I'm thinking not.

what's funny is that this infighting, and lack of co-operation among all levels of government has existed for years. the problem is that without independent oversight that has clout, just about nothing will ever get done. they formed Metrolinx in an effort to combat this, and yet infighting still exists, not to mention David Miller himself adding to all the fuss.

ultimately, it's us voters who are to blame. we elect these clowns and either support/oppose their decisions. if transit was as serious an issue as we all think it is, it would be a major election issue enough so that it could make or break the outcome. i think we all need to do our part by continually writing and speaking to our elected officials to make them understand how serious an issue this is. enough people use public transit within the GTA to make this a major political issue, but i honestly don't think they do. we'll all be quick to complain, but won't actually do anything about it (myself included).

oh yeah and without sustainable funding nothing will ever happen. $5 billion here and there every time there's a possibility that a government is in threat of collapse or an election looming isn't the right way to fund transit.

Lesson learned.

"You are virtually the ring leader, the way I see it."
Then, I blew out the candle.

I completely agree, and this type of mentality actually goes for all levels of government, and their constituents. Ever ask somebody to call their rep and do something? The answer is always the same 'yeah, what is my one phone call/letter going to do?'. People truly do feel that they have no clout in the political process, and that their only duty is the one vote they cast every four years, if that.

Unfortunately I never had the ability to vote in Toronto during a municipal election, as I only actually lived in the city for a couple of years. During the last federal election, I specifically asked the candidates in my area about their transit plans, which was actually one of the deciding factors for me, along with the carbon tax.

But you have a good point, that we do not hold these people accountable, and we need to put greater pressure on them to perform in a more consistent and thoughtful manner, rather than with knee jerk reactions when their jobs are on the line. We need a transit rider's federation, like we have a tax payer's federation. hmm...

more in-fighting... really can't wait for most of these bureaucrats to get old and die so we can start to build a more efficient transit system..

Metrolinx frames TTC as regional obstacle
Torstar News Service
16 January 2009 05:40

Metrolinx wants the province to designate it a mega-transit authority, with the power to decide where TTC and other regional transit systems will pick up passengers, and which fares and transfers riders use when crossing city borders.

In a frank report to the Metrolinx board — hastily withdrawn earlier this week from the online agenda for Friday’s meeting — Metrolinx staff accuse the TTC of being the major obstacle to a fully integrated route and fare system in the Toronto region.

The kind of seamless transit service throughout the Toronto-Hamilton area envisioned by Metrolinx, says the report, will never happen if it’s left up to the municipal transit agencies.

The TTC, by far the largest of the nine involved, still hasn’t committed to the proposed Metrolinx fare card, called Presto.The TTC has told Metrolinx it is no longer interested in a cost-sharing agreement that would have seen the TTC cede this duplicate service to Mississauga and York Region and save taxpayers about $1.5 million annually, according to Metrolinx.

what I don't like is that they don't tell you when the service has been restored.

Sigh. I'm going to have to sign up to this, now that I will be in TO more often again.

It would have been nice to have this service tonight. I waited 45 minutes for a bus that's supposed to run every 15 minutes at school.

That's exactly what we have been talking about. Who cares about the damned subway, give us alerts for the buses!

For those who cannot check email on your phone: you can usually forward mail to your phone through a text message. For me, I tell Gmail to forward all my mail to my phone through the following email address: [email protected]. Those email addresses are available for most providers.

quote:
* Rogers Wireless: [10-digit phone number]@pcs.rogers.com
* Fido: [10-digit phone number]@fido.ca
* Telus: [10-digit phone number]@msg.telus.com
* Bell Mobility: [10-digit phone number]@txt.bell.ca
* Kudo Mobile: [10-digit phone number]@msg.koodomobile.com
* MTS: [10-digit phone number]@text.mtsmobility.com
* President’s Choice: [10-digit phone number]@txt.bell.ca
* Sasktel: [10-digit phone number]@sms.sasktel.com
* Solo: [10-digit phone number]@txt.bell.ca
* Virgin: [10-digit phone number]@vmobile.ca

So you can use this work around until we get text message updates straight from the TTC.
