The notion that mainstream trance is somehow inferior to other, more refined genres of EDM is completely idiotic. Newbies should be pointed towards mainstream trance, simply because they're most likely to enjoy it. That's what mainstream is about.
And by many definitions of the word, this type of music can actually be labeled 'the best'.

Feed him/her some ASOT till it gets aquainted with producers etc and becomes a fan. After some time it will break off towards techno/house. Even if one is presented to genres such as minimal techno from a beginning, it won't be appreicated due to the technical skill in the unlikely case it catches on with a newb from the beginning.

Agnelli and Nelson.
Who did Big Sky's most popular remix?
Who did Perfect's most popular remix?
And that PVD - New York City...that song is easy for anyone to love.
Markus Schulz does play a lot less vocal trance tracks on his global dj broadcast, and he is easy to like I think.

there's 2 ways one can get to like trance, either you get introduced to the modern popular ASOT stuff or you get introduced to classic/epic trance.
for classic/epic, try:
Humate - Love Stimulation (Paul van Dyk remix)
Armin van Buuren - Communication part 2 (armin van buuren's remake) (easily the track that made me like epic trance)
