If you fail to see the value in this, you fail understanding the mechanics of learning a language. Word association is how learn a language. Whether it is associating a picture, the word in your native tongue, or some acronym, you're still doing word association. This is the way that Rosetta Stone teaches.

I think this program has its good points in the word association category, but in my opinion, I think it fails greatly in that it does not teach you the understanding of pronouns and conjugation early. For me, these are things that are very important because I want to be able to form a sentence and practice that stuff pretty early on.

Also, I agree with woscar and Lira that you need to be able to not "think" when using the other language to be fluent and speak it well.
