You really shouldn't have any problems recording into Ableton. I don't like using it for that but I have recorded a few guitar song using it and an M Audio pci audiophile sound card.

The problems you should have are the same with any DAW, which would be the quality of your pre amps, how well your room is treated, the quality of your mics, how they are positioned int he room, etc...

I think you just need to configure your sound card's preferences and the preferences in Ableton properly. Sometimes you might have to check or uncheck 'software monitoring' or things like that.
