I think Sony learned a lesson after the PS2 DRE debate that ended in lawsuits and pissed off consumers by building the PS3 like a tank. The failure rate is among the lowest in the history of consoles, which is quite a feat when you consider just how capable the machine is.

The Wii seems small enough that standing it vertically wouldn't seem risky, but it really comes down to what fits your setup the best, like you mentioned.

I noticed this...I got my Xbox about a year after it launched. It couldn't read burned CD's (shitty since I wanted to rip a lot of music onto the HD), however many of my friend's Xbox's could read burned discs just fine.
