Listen to her, I work in a big company (26000+) and there was two waves of staff cuts, in our division it was total of 200 out of 3000+ people.

From all the people i know who got cut, all of them were "dead wood", underperforming and having an attitude...

So if you're known to have an attitude at work, or not being busy, be scared... very scared.

We just hired I think 2 or 3 more people... all senior-ish level positions though. No need for grunt work because they just get me to wave my magic engineer's wand and have it done automatically.

Seriously though, there are good industries to be in right now and there are bad ones. Financial services (other than insurance) is definitely a bad one. So is real estate. Essential services like food, utilities, health care, telcos, etc. are doing A-OK, as are industries that are directly related. Now's not a bad time to be in the booze sector either; layoffs -> boredom -> depression -> drinking.

I suppose I am known to have an attitude at work, similar to the attitude I have everywhere else; I have an attitude because I work hard, perform exceptionally well, and have little patience for those who put in a half-assed effort and expect me to cover for them or help dig them out of their holes. If you piss away more than a half hour a day on Facebook or TA then yeah, I'd be pretty friggin' worried, but I can't agree with the recommendation that everybody quietly take it up the chute and become a mindless cog until the recession is over. No matter what the job, no matter what the economy, assertiveness is an important part of competence.

I bet job placement agencies are bombarded with applications... or even Workopolis and Monster.ca
Makes me wonder what the unemployment rate is thus far...

It was announced today that the company I work for was named one of the world's top 100 sustainable corporations at the World Economic Forum in switzerland. One of only 5 Canadian corporations, and one of only 16 in the financial services industry to make the cut.

All the layoffs at my work happened within the last year. But my department is generally good because its hard to find people to fill in positions.

But the same thing is happening at my moms work. If your work is laying people off not because of salary or because of seniority, then they must be screwing around. But I wouldn't worry too much, although if you think you might be in danger, update the resume and check other options and don't tell anyone what you are doing. Just test the waters and see whats out there. There's always EI by the way!

So generally I would agree with this, but I don't think now is the time to be cocky either. People who can encourage even the underperformers to work as a team will be seen favorably no matter what.

I don't know what kind of company you work for, but even if you are performing well, being cocky vs. collaborative isn't really ever appreciated.

I've seen two people (in my team of nine) be laid off, and one left prior to that on his own. My company will be laying off 131 out of a total workforce of 318 salaried employees, and 78 out of 83 contractors, by the end of this year (at our location only). The bulk of this will happen in March 31st. Some of it is due to moving the positions into other countries (U.S., Argentina, maybe somewhere else), but I'm not sure how many positions will be closed down for good.

Globe and Mail Update

January 28, 2009 at 2:53 PM EST

Five Canadian companies are included on this year's list of the 100 most sustainable large companies in the world.

Toronto-Dominion Bank, EnCana Corp., Telus Corp., TransCanada Corp., and Royal Bank of Canada were considered to be among the elite corporations worldwide that are both environmentally friendly and likely to survive in a tough financial environment.

Encana ?!?!?
