Actually... it really was a Canadian who blasted that guy's head off. Michael Ironside had the brain busting role in the movie Scanners, which was filmed in Montreal.

I guess its the weird symbolic meaning behind the song that gets to me. The whole not singing it strikes me as terribly disrespectful, re: WWI/WWII. Not really willing to hang that principal though as some of those crazy CBC commenters are. It has its place in elementary school.
If parents want to opt out their kids for whatever reason, fine. I saw it more as a respect thing, taking off your hat, not being a dick.
