i would have mentioned del Toro, but his earlier works scare me. his later works the past couple of years have been good though.
I loved The Orphanage (which he may have just produced), but Pan's Labyrinth was an instant favorite, Hellboy far surpassed my expectations, and now I can't wait to see what he does with The Hobbit.
Cuaron made one of the most brilliant films I've ever seen (Children of Men) after making a fantastically dark interpretation of the best Harry Potter book. I didn't enjoy Y Tu Mama Tambien so much, but I can see why it garnered the acclaim it did. In any case, I'm stoked to see what he has up his sleeve (Mexico '68) in the coming years as well.
Mexican directors are taking over the world of film.

Oh, right. I forgot you'd rather spend your time listening to Rush tell you what to think.

.... fish in a barrel my man, fish in a barrel. Getting a response like that out of you was as easy as I expected.
It's called sarcasm. Check into it.

on a side note, Pan's Labrynth was the shit. Haven't seen any of the others. I gotta be in the mood to read subtitles constantly.

Honorable mention to Charlie Kaufman, who's actually a screenwriter, but I feel that he should be credited more than the guys who actually made the corresponding movies.
I approve of this elegant, sophisticated and superior post
