Interesting...never even thought to look there. |
My mate just picked up a residency (having never played out before) from Craigs list.
By the way a few things that haven't been mentioned.
Even if you don't think you're nervous, do a shit before the gig. There are multiple threads about the pre-gig shit (and even phantom pre-gig shot). Don't ask, you will understand later.
Don;t get drunk before hand. Even a couple of drinks, mixed with a bit of adrenaline and turn you in to this
...which is fine (er..no actually) at a huge event, but not at a small bar, standing in a dark corner.
You will get asked if you "have any hiphop" or "something other than techno". The standard response is, "yes, you're listening to it now".
When (not if) you fuck it up (I've never met a single person that managed not to make one mistake on their first gig) don;t give it away by the expression on your face. Most people won't even notice what you consider a fuck up, but trust me if you look like you just swallowed a hornet as the mixer is about to catch fire, just stone face it. Seriously, the amount of times I've seen a DJ attract attention to a mistake that non one in the room noticed is ridiculous. Check you facial expressions and body language at the door (apart from when it's going well obviously).
Relax and enjoy it, I had a friend that was an amazing DJ but quit because he got progressively more stressed with each gig. The once he quit he got thrown in at the deep end once while at a bar and becuase he didn't give a fuck anymore he really enjoyed it and got back in to with that mentality.
