Any sound rich in overtones (like a saw wave) can be thought of as the combination of a bunch of sine waves of different frequencies. The "note" you play denotes the frequency of the loudest and deepest sine wave (fundamental frequency); the overtones (whole or fractional multiples of fundamental frequency) are quieter and often hard to distinguish individually, but they give the sound its "character" or "timbre."
Combining sine waves of different frequencies together is the principle behind additive synthesis.
Subtractive synthesis takes a sound that's already rich in harmonics (like square or saw) and takes some of those harmonics away by filtering them out.
^ A few variations on the same sound. First one is with Operator E turned off, second with it turned on -- it gives a little "disorted" sounding tone to it. Third file is with Operator F's envelope at a higher sustain volume.
Here's the patch if you want to play around with it yourself:
I love FM Synthesis. I think its one of the things that VSTi's do really well. I use it quite a bit for warm sounds, 80s sounds, and plucks for house and techno. Also FM7 is my goto synth for hip hop at the moment.

A couple more FM7 patches for anyone who's interested:

I would assume so, but I don't know for sure as I haven't used FM8. It would certainly be a bad move on the part of NI to make everyone's pre-FM8 patches obsolete with the upgrade...
