If you're thinking about the pay off then you're definitely not ready to have kids. Buy a dog. Have a kid when you're ready to give 100% to it, place all your needs second to the child's and not expect a anything in return.

re babies.. I find them fascinating to interact with. in the first 5 years of their lives they are learning faster than any animal or adult human can. You can literally shape their personalities. I find watching/participating in that learning process amazing. It's awesome watcing my nephew figure stuff out for the first time.

The other thing is babies are meant to be the epitome of cute. Evolution has made us have protective instincts towards babies, so we love them for no reason in particular. In fact the only reason we find puppies and kittens cute is because they happen to share some of the same proportions as babies.. triggering the protective response. generally: smallness of frame; disproportionally large heads in relation to bodies; large eyes in proportion to face; and softness/baby fat are all factors that trigger the cuteness response.

I have never tried to enjoy the company of babies, so I don't know whether I'd be successful if I did. However, I have serious doubts in that regard...

As far as I am concerned, they are a plague. They have the vexatious ability to turn most otherwise intelligent adults into slavering buffoons. They babble unintelligibly or, even worse, cry and whine like, well, babies. Their incessant attention-seeking behavior ranges from the obnoxious to the loathsome. They are foul and unsanitary agglomerations of writhing flesh, as well as tiny black holes into which a vast array of resources unrelentingly disappear, never to be seen again.

There is certainly a great deal of merit to your discouragement. I remain open to the possibility that there are benefits outweighing these rather ponderous costs, but it appears exceedingly improbable.

my problem with babies is more with the parents, especially the 'breeders' as I call them. These were the kids in school with a lack of intelligence, common sense or morals, whose only 'contribution' to society is to get married and have children, giving nothing to society but more stupid kids. The kind of parents whose dreams involve dumping the kids and getting drunk every weekend, letting tv or streets raise them and such.

On the other hand, a couple of friends of mine who have been to university, got good jobs behind them, good bank balances etc have had their first kids & the difference is huge. They absolutely dote over them, have pride and aspire to raise them to have a better future. This I can deal with because in most cases the parents have both the intelligence and resources to do the job properly.

I appreciate that your friends are making a proper effort with their offspring, but how old is this little thing you're referring to?

Ideal or not, a large portion of a child's upbringing is done by it's peers, not it's parents. People SHOULD be giving their kids a proper lifestyle in it's early years, and I won't argue that it doesn't make a difference, but once the kid reaches a certain age, it becomes very different. A parent can't police what kind of friends a kid will make, or what kind of interests it will have. To do so (IMO) would be bad parenting.

of course not, but they do have the means (financial) behind them to do things properly. Many of my friends who've gone onto university & good careers had that. I was next down, my parents cared but didn't have as much money as those. Then you have those who don't work and don't intend to but just have kids for the financial benefits they can claim. Mostly their kids then go onto be the same. Obviously there's some exceptions but if you took the best & worst of my town for example it'd be true in 9 out of every 10 cases.

i'm sure i'm a pain in the ass to my parents even though they say i'm not, but yeah im finacially expensive and a fucking asshole to them most of the times, at least when im home...not when i'm away..which like 11 months of the year..
but they say i was a good boy when i was young so ok...
anyways i don't like kids or babies for the most part, but i assume if i had a daughter i would...
