Indeed, you are correct. People are also going to have sex without using condoms regardless of whether or not the pope tells them they should or should not.

I wouldn't say this is a denial of anything... Did you even bother to read the question posed to the Pope? He was asked to respond to people who view the church's position on how best to stop the spread of HIV as ineffective, that is exactly what he did. Now, whether you believe the position to be practical or not is another thing; however, one cannot deny that if followed the church's position would be more effective then anything else in preventing the spread of HIV. In terms of practicality I would submit that people who ignore the Church's position on pre/extra marital sex aren't choosing not to use condoms because the Pope told them not too, as they clearly don't give much credence to the Pope to begin with. Regardless, the church is not practicality; it's about theology and you cannot expect the largest religious organization in the world to abandon it's theology.
