For example, the last time I went to an EDM club (not going to mention a venue), I stayed completely sober all night, maybe 1 or 2 drinks. I had one acquaintance come up to me and tell me these exact words: "You only live once, do some drugs so you can have more fun. You're so lame. You're not an old lady". A couple other acquaintances (same night), told me I looked bored and offered to sell me pills. If one more person came up to me and told me I should take drugs, I was going to go off!! I just don't enjoy going to these clubs/events anymore. It's so unmotivating to be around drugs all night. I've been in this scene for almost 9 years now, and I think I'm done (maybe go out if it's a special event). I felt like I had to make a thread about this. The main thing that concerns me is the friends I have made throughout the years. I don't want to lose my friends because I'm not into the scene/music anymore. I want to go out and support my friends (whether they are DJ's or promoters), but at the same time, I don't have it in me to go out every other weekend like I used to. Well, that's all.

I've been where you have been before regarding this as I told you before. It took me two years of going to church every Sunday to get right with things. You have to decide... do you want to spend the rest of your Sundays with crazy crackheads or crazy Christians? I choose crazy crackheads any day of the week

All kidding aside, I think you need to do something similar to what I did and just take some time off to do other things. I took some time off to watch movies, go to plays, go to comedy shows, take classes, learn how to boat, devote time to reading, check out another city and live one house from the sand. It sounds like you are already doing this. When the time is right you will come back and enjoy some great nights of techno and partying... I'm sure. I think once it is in your blood it's hard to get it out. Drugs are everywhere, maybe more so in this scene, but ultimately, it is your responsibility what you put in your body and how you live your life. I understand it can be frustrating to talk to people who are not on the same intellectual level as you are. That's why it is important to branch out and make friends that share similar intellectual interests to your own. I have been fortunate to find a few good people in the EDM community who share similar spiritual, artistic, and intellectual interests who I can attend seminars, activities, and workshops with.

There are many people who don't do any drugs at techno parties. People I think party all the time, I come to find out, don't at all. Not everything is what it seems. Choose which road is best for you and live it with passion, integrity, and power.

You are in a good place if you dont need drugs, to escape from whatever there is to escape from. The music, if its good music, should be enough right? I listen to other genres more than I listen to EDM, even though I produce EDM. What makes listening to only EDM hard is that today's upfront EDM music has very little dynamics. Most of EDM is a constant stream of normalized energy and normalized thought requirement, so it requires a constant attention to really enjoy it. So as you get older and your attention span and patience allocated to things like music drop, it gets hard to keep up with the music and actually enjoy it. So music with more dynamics like pop, hip hop, rock become more attractive. One of the reasons why Trance music is the most famous form of EDM music...besides the focus on emotions, it has the dynamics you find in other more consumable genres. Best way to enjoy EDM is to take it in doses amongst other genres of music. Today's pop, rock, and hip hop are toxic to listen to, there is a lot of great pieces of dynamic music of the past to listen to.

i can understand your resorting to mainstream music to escape the drug culture often associated with electronic music, but there are better ways to distance yourself from that ugliness than reduction to the lowest common denominator. the music you listen to is ultimately associated with the setting you're in including the people you're surrounded by. if you're only listening to edm in dark, grimy hollywood megaclubs with druggies chatting your head off about drugs, then of course you're going to develop a distaste for it. i think it's only healthy that you do react that way. i've never witnessed a more rampant or casual environment for drug use anywhere else than hollywood, but i'm sure you can find an escape from all that at other edm parties with more mature crowds. i could be wrong though. in the end it's easy to continue enjoying the music without the drugs/druggies. just don't go out as much and when you do, don't stay out as long. for me, i love listening to edm on long bike rides, while running, driving and snowboarding. it becomes a soundtrack to some great scenery. listening to the music in normal, daytime settings at background levels can help you break the negative association. i can tire from listening to edm all the time just as easily, but i balance that out with other interests including silence, reading, public radio, tivo and occasionally music i listened to in high school. it's not like i've never tried turning the radio on as an alternative before, but i've found that rag is even more annoying than obvious drug users all up in your face. i would rather listen to npr or sports talk or nothing at all.

I pretty much hardly listen to EDM at all anymore. I have Bruce Springsteen in my cd player right now! lol

I listen when I go out to clubs now. That's it. And, as most that know me are aware, that pretty much doesn't happen right now.

I need to get a friend to send me his damn iPod mini so I can start my damn project. ugh

I used to listen to EDM all day everyday, but there are phases of burn out (and crap tracks lately).

Ive started digging through my CDs and picked up mos def - black on both sides and man, i miss when hip hop was like this. Hmmm theres nothing wrong with listening to numerous genres of music, everyone does. To turn your back on edm for reasons as stated is a bit ridiculous though. Were you in the party scene as opposed to being a true fan of the music ? I have never heard of someone who is a true fan abandoning the music they love....edm makes you hide form the world but ryan seacrest and such help you see the light and face career and life responsibilities...thats the funniest shit ive ever heard in my entire life. No offense but your views towards edm in this thread are quite jaded. I love rock and old school hip hop and such but i love edm for the music itself. No one i know who goes out clubbing uses drugs like that at all. We did in the late 90s but we have long ditched that and are there for the music like most of the people who attend shows these days. I know actual raves...not club shows...still exist out in cali where you guys are at, and yes if those were the type of parties you frequented i can understand why. To me personally it seems like you were into the druggy scene. I dont know though. Theres 2 types of people at edm shows. The true fans of the music, and the people who are there for the druggy party experience. Most people i have known in my life who were at shows for the druggy aspect have since abandoned the music and have gone on to a strict listening diet of top 40...which in turn shows they were never really fans in the first place. This music was simply paraphanalia to them and went along with their nights experience. Maybe at your core you arent really a big fan of this music after all...and if so...to each is own.

What you have just referenced is not even the spirit or core of the music and culture. I dont know what kind of clubs you go to but i havent heard anyone blabber on ridiculously about how good pills and k are since god...i dont know..around 2002 maybe ? To me, judging from your own words i just mentioned plus the fact you relate it to "hiding from responsibilities" and being free to enjoy "intelligent conversations" like being associated with this music reduces your life standards to that of talking to some low intelligence drugged out zombie about pills. This is just absurd. Edm is what most of the world loves and listens to. Go to a club in madrid, paris, barcelona,tokyo, brazil, or anywhere other than here and everyone listens to edm in some form of another. And no they arent laying around with their eyes flapping back and forth from e pills. More like adults out having a good time enjoying themselves to music that they love or love to dance to. The olympic committee in europe asked tiesto to open the olympics back a few years ago cause this music is so popular. That committee consisted of people 40-60 years in age. None of them thought in their minds when they asked him did they have a mental image of kids rolling their faces off. This music and culture at its core isnt about drugs but a form of beautiful music and togetherness that cant be matched by any other type of music out there. Im sorry that dirty rave environments have ruined your views towards edm. But like i said if you have let all the reasons you have named ruin this music for you...then obviously this music didnt touch you for the right reasons. To associate our culture with the last of a dying breed candy kids in california is absurd though. Candy kids arent even the main fans of the music at all..they are a minuscule population. Out here in charlotte where i live no one eats pills or does k like that..there may be some but the amount of adults who are out drinking , dancing, dressing normal and enjoying the music far outweighs any lone druggy wandering the club. But in all honesty i think you should quit listening to this music for the reasons youve named. I love ALL music, as long as it's good.

Classical, country, rock, reggae, hip hop, Flamenco, I listen to it all. But of course, my passion at the moment is EDM, specifically deep house and funk.

Julia, you always say how you want to get out of LA, so why not come to SB for a weekend getaway? You're always welcome here. Bring along Mario and Anya, we can all chill at the beach and have a BBQ. Life is a lot more simple here than it is in LA, it's not as fast paced. Everyone is friendly, we have close to perfect weather, great beaches, and plenty of places to eat great food and wine. You can rent a bike and cruise along State Street, visit The Mission, go hiking, or even do some Yoga.

So seriously, come on up. We should plan something.

I hear ya Julia. Although I got the "let's do shit tons of drugs!" phase out of the way in high school so by the time I was really into clubbing it wasn't much of an issue. Unless you count the sauce and the fire.

But I've been feeling fairly burnt out on "the scene" lately too. Haven't been keeping up with it much. Although my years as a punk and/or rudeboy still make it hard for me to buy into top 40 shit. But I've been listening to all sorts of shit lately. Hell, the last show I went to was Ladysmith Black Mambazo.

I love everyone I've met through the various scenes in various places. Everyone I've met on here, you guys are amazing! But I just haven't felt much like pursuing clubbing lately. I'm sure it'll catch up with me again and I'll be shitfaced dancing poorly in front of the booth again at some point, but for now it's more of a once in a blue moon sorta thing.
