I absolutely love Kirk DeGiorgio, he's one of those unsung hereoes of techno who's underservedly disregarded in every discussion about the most influential people of the genre. He is, together with Michael Golding and Steve Rutter of B12, the first producer who brought techno to UK (and Europe in general), and the first who started to interpret Detroit techno in his own way. He's mostly unknown because the labels he had been releasing on (ART, Likemind, B12) are long dead and music of them is pretty much unobtainable these days.

There's an hour and a half long interview with him on Red Bull Academy site where he explains his life story to a bunch of people who probably don't even know who is he, and it's a pretty interesting thing to watch since he explains how he got in touch with techno, describes his trips to Chicago and Detroit and work with Derrick May and Photek, showcases his skills in Ableton... He also mentions that he grew up on his aunt's (or grandma's) disco records so this mix is probably some kind of tribute to that times.

yeah kirk degiorgio is a fantastic producer. love all his work as 'as one' and 'esoterik' as well. truly a pioneer.

I love disco, too. Been collecting it for years. Underground disco is, however, hard to come by. I'd argue that some of the mixes here are not underground disco at all, though.

Funny enough, just couple weeks ago or so I made an underground disco mix of my own, posted here on the DJ Promotion section, can also be found in my sig. If anyone is curious enough - those tracks are pretty dam rare and I havent seen any of them in the mixes posted so far in this thread.

My favourites definitely have to be the works/remixes by Patrick Cowley - though he is more of on Hi-NRG side. I was inspired by Studio 54 music, the Loft, the entire Disco Box series was hugely influential to me ( http://www.discogs.com/label/Disco+Box ), Larry Levan, Tom Moulton, etc. etc. etc.

honestly i thought the same thing when I saw your tracklist. almost all of those tunes are really well known disco favorites. all top tunes, but nothing really a mystery to disco fans.

i don't think anyone but the old jocks are ever going to have "underground" disco tracks...

You're too underground then. I would actually say that a lot of disco fans I know didn't know half of the tracks I used in my mix - and though I admit, they are all well-known tracks! But just because they're well-known, doesnt mean they are not underground. What is underground, anyway? Well, its tracks that are not massive on the airwaves; for disco, non-underground disco would be Gloria Gaynor, Chic, Boney M, Donna Summer, Earth Wind & Fire, Sister Sledge, Sylvester, Studio 54 stuff, etc.

I couldn't use the really underground tunes such as THIS ONE, because its hard to mix and are not great dancefloor pleasers in most settings - but fantastic tracks nevertheless for listening. Plus, disco is known for its groovy/funky, not experimental side.

Unknown disco tracks, owned and known by a few people are not really underground by any means; they are more likely to be amateur and experimental if anything; unless there's some beef to them, like the one I linked to in the previous paragraph (but that one is acclaimed). Just because a famous DJ spins a disco track and says its underground, doesnt mean it is.

ANyway, that's that for my rambling.

I guess the only reason I know the tracks is because I also belong to a large disco forum where basically, just as you had mentioned, patrick cowley, moroder, gino soccio, basically that whole space disco-ish sound is the prefered sound so maybe i just got the impression those tracks are more well known then they really are i dunno. obviously stuff like earth wind and fire is more commercial for sure.

it's always hard to judge what was popular at the time when you're really just trying to put together the pieces from a later point in time hehe

still good stuff though for sure
