I don't know for absolute certain, but I can't imagine why they would not have integrated a conveyor belt that only does x-ray scans, but detect scents of explosive material.
I mean, you couldfill your bottle of water, put in a quarter spoon for C(CH2ONO2)4, shake it until it saturates and the water looks completely normal. Once on the plane, go to the bathroom, take out the bathroom lightbulb and use it as a furnace, cook the water bottle until the explosive clay forms on the bottom of the bottle. Then cut out the electrical wire from the light bulb fixture, attach it to an open switch for your makeshift bomb.
But of course.

Why exactly do you need water up there, buddy? You sound kinda suspicious to not relinquish your bottle of the most abundant resource on earth.
It's not exactly abundant when you're 30,000 feet above the earth in a solid metal tube, is it?

If you don't need a car at your destination, train and bus are easily more cost effective than flying...
Not necessarily. Lets look at a trip from Seattle to Los Angeles, and back.
Amtrak: $98 one way, for a total of $196 prior to service fees.
Virgin Air: $59 one way, for a total of $139.20 after service fees.

In places like mexico though I think that taking the bus or cabing can be more cost effective than taking your own vehicle unless it is a very rugged vehicle. (I lost three tires etc.. while driving in mexico..)
Don't get into a cab in Mexico.

I was always under the impression that it was a high risk for tourists.

I think the primary risk is dying in a wicked car accident. Friggen Mexican cab drivers are lunatics. Seriously, 150KM on a regular street is a little overboard IMO. Otherwise, it's not that bad as long as you negotiate how much you are going to pay them before you go.
Anyway, the train is not necessarily more cost efficient, ESPECIALLY inside of Canada.
It really depends on where you're going in Canada. If you're going from LAX to BC or Alberta, then it's not that bad of a drive. If you're going from LAX to Ontario or anywhere out East, catch a flight.
It all comes down to where you're coming from and where you're going to really, but I honestly wouldn't suggest taking the train inside of Canada at least, and would never suggest taking a bus from the U.S. to Canada, but only because that would be the shittiest trip imaginable.

LOL it only appears sweet because the taxes are not included in the first price they show you.
once you add taxes and shit, its the same price range as orbitz/expedia/travelocity.

Airport security can suck my left nut. The day I was told that, even though the small water bottle was CLEAR, the liquid inside was CLEAR and you could see directly through it, I needed to place a water bottle through the x-ray machine "so that it [could] be examined for safety reasons" was the day that I lost all faith in the FAA.
haha. I made a mistake last october in gran canaria. Our flight was 4:30am out and we got checked through at 2am. walking through security I forgot totally that i'd bought a new bottle of water to drink in the airport/plane and this really butch woman stopped me & I wondered what was up. she muttered something and i tried to walk on and she screamed at me & pointed to it. half asleep I kinda apologised, downed about 1.5l of water in a minute or so and threw the bottle in their designated bin. Sleep deprivation isn't good when mad security people don't speak english

I had a 430am layover in Atlanta with another 8 hours of flying ahead of me, so as I shuffle towards the security point I decided to chow down on a chocolate bar. I had pretty much just woken up only a half an hour before, so I wasn't really thinking about anything but getting back onto the plane and going to sleep. Still eating the chocolate bar, I walk through the security point.
The security guard steps in front of me and I'm sort of confused so I try to walk around him. He steps in front of me and says "You can't take that bar of chocolate in here." I looked at him confused and I was like "seriously? You're not going to let me taking something I bought at the duty-free store and am actively eat (which means its safe) into the airport?". Even though I showed him the receipt he took the chocolate from me, grabbed a bin and ran it through the x-ray machine.
The unwrapped part of the chocolate (including the moist, freshly gnawd on part) had touched the bottom of the bin and he couldn't understand why I didn't want it back afterwards.
Bunch of idiots, I tell ya. I don't think I am going to eat my own bar of explosives, no matter how delicious it is.

I've always heard american airport staff are amongst the worst ever. One author here wrote in his book about a time he was asked at some big airport "any fruit or vegetables" and they were taken aback when he responded that he'd appreciate a couple of bananas and a mango.
