I would probably suggest a hybrid for your style though. it has a more relaxed type of riding & can do off-road on gentle paths/cycle ways but won't handle anything too extreme, drops etc.
for example if you were paying £600ish (whatever that is in usd now) you'd get such as
basic front suspension to help on slight bumps, upright riding position, good mid-range sram/shimano components and such.
spend the same on a proper 'mountain bike' and you'd get probably basic entry-level components for the 'off road' sense, with the basic & quite poor rockshox dart forks. go upto £675ish and you'd get a great bike though
My bike is a tad more up the food chain line and right now i'm doing the kind of riding you want to do, but I know that once i get some core fitness, it'll handle a bit more offroad when I'm ready to hit it.
Those are nice bikes, Ian. The reason a bike would come in useful atm is to aid or facilitate my drift around the city more easily. In this way, I don't rely solely on buses & trains.
I could also get to my destination quicker and get more things done at the same time, while getting a decent workout (although i play sports when i really need to break a sweat). more suggestions are welcomed...
