Other than it being a unique strain, I don't see how it is any different than the regular flu that kills far more people than this one has.

It's just a mutation of the flu... which has the same effect as all the other flus from what I gather.

Same thing, different name... something else to blow out of proportion and scare everyone over.

http://www.wrongdiagnosis.com/f/flu/deaths.htm

If someone can explain to me why it is so much worse than regular flu... I would be appreciative because I am having a hard time understanding the reason for all the alarm.

EDIT:

http://www.flufacts.com/impact/statistics.aspx

Every time the flu comes around it's a unique new strain (or mutation). That alone would not be enough to alarm anyone.

The main difference with this strain is that normally flu kills the very old or the very young, or people with pre-existing conditions (such as AIDS) or severely undernourished people with little access to medicine in the developing world. Deaths of healthy people in the developed world from flu are extremely rare.

This particular strain seems to be killing some young healthy affluent individuals... Which is not good since influenza (unlike most fatal diseases) is spread very easily.

I personally can't find information on the people who actually died from this flu other than one baby, and there isn't even any information about the health condition of the baby to begin with. Are you just assuming they are healthy people? Source please?

In order to be convinced, I need cold hard evidence. Otherwise, I am not on board with the hype.

http://www.cdc.gov/flu/about/viruses/index.htm

You have to assume the cause of death was swine flu. That's the intention of the doctors: to identify the virus. Of course they would mention any other medical condition if it were a factor, not just in this case but in all cases presented.

What do you need to be convinced of exactly? Do you actually need for someone to come here and say they have a relative who already died from this so you can feel some sympathy or do you just want to exchange sources for the sake of pretending to be smart?

As someone else already mentioned, all available data can be accessed in WHO, also in credible newspapers, CDC, etc.

In any case, if you're just looking for someone to convince you so you can jump on "board with the hype," you're just wasting your time, or as a I wrote earlier, you're just seeking some attention pretending to be smart.

I have found nothing to support this claim. The only death thus far in the U.S. was an infant, which is normal as their immune systems aren't very strong.

As for the other deaths, all have been within Mexico where the quality of health care, and the living conditions are below that of many other countries, especially Canada and the U.S. It is not surprising that they are dying.

Additionally, there have been no details given surrounding the ages, health conditions etc. of those that have died, so we cannot just assume that these are regular healthy people who received proper medical attention.

Sure the ultimate cause of death may have been Swine Flu, but if they have pre-existing conditions that depress their immune system or are just simply too young or old to fight it off, it's kind of irrelevant. It's the same as any other flu strain.

I certainly don't want to hear that someones family member has died from it, and I certainly am not wanting to feel sympathy. I am genuinely curious as to why people are freaking out over this when it doesn't seem like that big of a deal. LOL @ "sake of pretending to be smart".

WHO has nothing yet regarding the flu, and CDC references the Swine Flu in similar fashion as regular flu.

Anyway, even medical professionals are agreeing that it isn't a big deal:

quote:
Swine flu is believed to have killed more than 150 people in Mexico. On Wednesday morning, the U.S. confirmed the death of a 23-month-old boy from swine flu -- the first swine flu death outside of Mexico. However, the child was from Mexico, and it is believed he contacted the swine flu there. Low said that's because the disease is much more widespread in Mexico than in other countries. However, he said the ratio of people in Mexico who have recovered from swine flu is much higher than the number of those who have died from it. He said only the very sick are being identified in Mexico as having the disease, making the outbreak appear more severe than it really is. In actual fact, Low said, the death-rate is very similar to that of seasonal influenza. "When you infect one million, two million, three million people with seasonal influenza, some of those individuals are going to be at greater risk of having a bad outcome, and they die as a result of that," Low said.

I don't know about you, but as for myself, I trust the intelligence and experience of an infection disease specialist over a journalist trying to write a compelling article, laced in fearful propaganda, in hopes that it will receive an abundance of reads from the fools who cannot think for themselves and get suckered into the hysteria.

I could be totally wrong and we're all going to die, which is why I am open to discussion and would seriously appreciate replies and sources to prove such.

Curiously the very same factor that made the Spanish Flu so deadly...

That's what I meant when I said if it were a factor it would have been noted by the doctors. None so far.

WHO has nothing regarding the flu and yet they raised the level again today? Something is obviously wrong here.

The professionals you're referring to don't say it isn't that big of a deal, they're saying the death-rate is very similar. Oh, and it's actually just one professional you're talking about, right? As for the death-rate I would say it's too early to compare this flu with others. Many tests are still in process.

The point is the new virus is spreading and nations want to stop that. It is not about journalists trying to harvest hysteria in the public, is about national leaders, advised by experts on health matters, trying to stop the disease.

I have some sources but all are in Spanish, I'll try looking for some in English after I get back from class.

I wouldn't go to the extreme saying we're all going to die because of this. Mexico will try to normalize public life next week. Schools will re-open as well as businesses. It seems to me that the "hype" is coming from other countries, like Argentina banning flying to Mexico.

You might also want to google "cytokine storm." The reason it kills the healthy is because the bodies of healthy people release too many cytokines.
