Considering one of his singles managed to get a 1/5 at trance.nu (which is, like, -100/5 on most other sites), my curiosity over this album was quite high.

TranceCritic review.

Ahh, I've been trying to recall that website; found it uniquely detailed, and wanted to keep tabs on it from time to time.

Glad you mentioned it.

I never thought I’d say this about standard 4/4 dance music, but Durand has actually managed to make tracks that are nigh on impossible to dance to. I’m not even talking about the usual overlong breakdown-build nonsense Dutch trance abuses -the song-writing itself lacks any sense of flow. When the rhythms, basslines, and synth-hooks are all in play, they sound horribly disjointed, creating this weird, herky-jerky momentum that saps the energy right out of your legs; it’s the sonic equivalent of walking on a railroad track. In fact, that’s exactly what it was like, as I couldn’t even get a decent walking groove going when I was listening to stuff like Papillon, Ancient Garden… hell, everything up to City Never Sleeps. I’m sure Durand’s defenders will point out that I’m not listening to his music in the proper context, that I should be hearing it blasting out of towers of speakers at clubs. Yet walking and dancing aren’t that dissimilar -both require a sense of rhythmic motion, and Durand’s music totally, utterly, fucking wrecks it when you try to move with. Then again, many of Durand’s fanbase considers dancing to be jumping in one spot with a fist in the air.

Your review of that is spot on.

However, I can't believe you rated this piece of shit 3/5 and described it as "bangin" and "fine as ever".

Does this come as a surprise? He has managed to murder every classic remake he has done.

I think it's about time someone retired. I won't even bother to listen to this album.

i think it's about time he found a new career really. it's not so much about retiring, people are good at some things, but he's really just not good at making music/dj'ing whatsoever. i don't mean to be a c*nt about it or an elitist, but let's be real

the guy is as good at making music/dj'ing as GM is at staying alive financially and making cars with good gas mileage

Richard Durand is the Florence Foster Jenkins of the EDM world:
quote:
Florence Foster Jenkins (July 19, 1868 – November 26, 1944) was an American soprano who became famous for her lack of rhythm, pitch, tone, and overall singing ability.

...From her recordings, it is apparent that Jenkins had little sense of pitch and rhythm and was barely capable of sustaining a note. Her accompanist can be heard making adjustments to compensate for her tempo variations and rhythmic mistakes. Her dubious diction, especially in foreign language songs, is also noteworthy. Nonetheless, she became tremendously popular in her unconventional way. Her audiences apparently loved her for the amusement she provided rather than her musical ability. Critics often described her work in a backhanded way that may have served to pique public curiosity.

Despite her patent lack of ability, Jenkins was firmly convinced of her greatness. She compared herself favorably to the renowned sopranos Frieda Hempel and Luisa Tetrazzini, and dismissed the laughter which often came from the audience during her performances as coming from her rivals consumed by "professional jealousy." She was aware of her critics, however, saying "People may say I can't sing, but no one can ever say I didn't sing."
