While there is an element to what you're saying I do agree with, along with fears of "nanny state"/etc, some things you get 'outraged' about leave me scratching my head a bit. Sort of like PETA, while at one level I can agree with part of their cause, but they are just such a bunch of whack jobs I have a hard time taking anything they do seriously.

Why should I? And why should the government be involved in this? How about a 5 cent DISCOUNT off the grocery bill for not using a bag?

I'd venture a guess that more people are likely to respond to a charge than a discount. Being charged for a bag = more likely to not get the bag. Where a discount is more likely to go unnoticed and not change consumer behavior that much.

Again more cost and defeats the purpose doesn't it?

How is it defeating the purpose?
- Many people out right toss their grocery bags
- They don't hold as much garbage

You're still a hypocrite. If you can't practice what you preach, shut the fuck up when you're talking to me.

It is not collusion for companies to pass along a charge to you. It's kind of how business works.

I didn't hear you crying collusion when every store gave you your bag for free.

I do understand it.
Charging for something that costs a company money is something every company does. That doesn't mean they're all colluding.

What's next....having to pay for a receipt?

oh wait but there's more:

fresh meat packaging
fruits and vegetable plastic bags
anything to carry bulk products (olives, cheese, candy, pastries, etc)

wait there's even more:

parking fees (cities think about taxing those)
pay for your shopping karts
etc etc

unfortunately the plastic law bag is a symptom of a much bigger problem. The government (especially toronto and ontario) now feel it is their right to control every little choice there is to make because their way somehow is the right way. Why? Because with every single little law that is passed without resistance, it is a license for more control. Its out of control now. You do realize the next thing on their list is charging for water bottles, fast food containers and paper bags right? But hell, whats a few more nickles and dimes for a population that is now used to being nickled and dimed right?

Or better yet, the grocery stores only save 2 cents on a bag and would lose 3 cents on a discount when the opposite makes them a gross 7 cents more.

[/quote] they dont hold as much garbage, arent we being engineered to NOT throw out as much garbage? To be honest all i need is a grocery bag every couple of days to manage my garbage. Green bags are of not much use to me. But again, why should my situation be taken into account when city hall knows better?

So you're telling me you don't have tons of them sitting around?? Because I went plastic-bag-less ages ago...and STILL have hundreds of left over plastic bags sitting in my cupboard from grocery trips from 2+ years ago.

Actually, if you're in such desperate need, I'm willing to mail them to you. I'd love to get rid of these fucking things.

edit: You'll be paying for the shipping though.

Thats what people should do:

shop, go at the cash, and ask to see the manager if they want to charge you for a bag, if they don't want to give them out of convienience then so be it, leave everything there and leave.

or

I plan on briging grocery bags from other chains if I have to shop at those who charge, at least someone will get free advertizing.
